Gord Downie - Secret Path

There have been some great reviews written already so I thought I'd pass along a few random thoughts from the Toronto Secret Path show last night for those that might be interested:

-Gord worked a space on stage that was only 12-15 feet wide, similar to the space he would have had when playing the opening four songs on the MMP tour this summer. He paced back and forth and used a few hand gestures but none of his "dance" moves. He got down on hands and knees for emphasis during "Haunt Them".

-Kevin Drew turned his back to the crowd and watched the animated film every time he played guitar (when not playing keys). Josh Finlayson would also often gaze above and behind to watch the film while playing.

-I watched Gord's face closely during "The Only Place to Be". I wanted to see his reaction when he delivered the lines "I've got lots of time, My whole life ahead..." He sang it with none of the knowing smirk or facetiousness that he did during the summer tour when singing lines of discussing mortality that had taken on new meaning.

-From my vantage point I could read Gord's teleprompter. In addition to the lyrics there would sometimes be little sets of instructions. For instance, prior to "Swing Set" it read "Band vamps, come in when you feel like it".

-Gord's voice was spectacular. No screamo-Gord at all. Admittedly he was a bit rough at times this summer (although overall it was as good as he's sounded in years), but last night he was as on as I've heard him sound since the 2000 "An Evening With... " M@W tour. He also knew the songs very well. I had listened to the album around 8-10 times prior to the show and I was unable to detect a single flub. He sung the songs very close to the studio version. There was no messing with phrasing, etc.

-Gord said very little during the evening. Mike did all the talking before and after the concert.

-People I saw: Paul and his wife Joanne, Strombo, and Ed and Tyler from the Barenaked Ladies. Also there were Gord's mom Lorna, his two sisters, and obviously Mike and Patrick.

-The band was incredibly tight. A true group of all-stars.

There were lots of tears around me. It was a beautiful moment to finish with Pearl Wenjack singing and then to hear "Ashes of Love" played, a song that she used to dance to with Charlie.

I agree. Gord's voice was spectacular last night. Just as strong as it is on the album. Considering the songs were written and recorded a couple years ago and the band really only had a couple days of rehearsal, they sounded incredible. I even liked Gord's little "Here we go..." before the chorus kicks in on "The Only Place to Be" -- just as he does on the album.

I also saw Atom Egoyan there -- actualy I would have been surprised if he wasn't there.

I am also just seeing on Twitter that Gord and the band are playing at Massey Hall right now...a surprise set at the Dream Serenade show (which features Broken Social Scene and Barenaked Ladies).

Finally, really bummed to read in the Globe article that Gord and his wife aren't together. Obviously, I have no idea why (nor is it any of my business), but hearing that makes Gord's struggle seem even sadder.

I was there. Dream Serenade is a fundraiser for the Beverly school in Toronto. Broken Social Scene and Barenaked Ladies were on the bill so most of Gord's band was already involved. When Gord was introduced to open the night, I lost my mind. He played The Stranger, Swing Set, Secret Path, and The Only Place To Be. He and the band sounded great again. The songs obviously hit hard, but they felt a bit less heavy than on Friday night at Roy Thompson Hall without the video and all the emotion of the evening. It was very cool but also a bit strange to be enjoying those songs as I would any other songs at a Gord show.

It was an amazing night all around and Gord's appearance made it even better.

That's so cool. Just wondering, when did you know Gord was there? Did you hear before he went on stage, or did he just walk out and start playing?

Hayden is involved with the school and puts on the concert. He came out to introduce the night and the first act. Said it was a surprise guest doing incredible work towards reconciliation with the DownieWenjack fund. My jaw dropped and my buddy and I grabbed each other. Gord walked out and then my head exploded.

I was there as well. Was right up front and saw Billy Ray walk across the stage. I had a feeling all week he'd play considering his band mates were on the bill, but as soon as soon as I saw BR, I figured we were in for a treat. So lucky to have been at the Ottawa and Massey shows this week!
Here's a pic from my vantage point.

Johnny Fay, on the other hand, was in the first mezz, on the right side. Absolutely no one bothered him all night long.

Are you sure it was Johnny? Or was it Angus? I had to keep doing double-takes every time I looked at him.

Unless Angus dyed his hair grey after the Kasador set, pretty sure it was Johnny. But the resemblance is uncanny. He ordered a beer beside me before the set at Grace's. Somehow I've seen Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys get carded this year, but not the super young looking drummer of an unsigned Canadian college rock band.

While we're here, full points to Angus for rocking a Mahones tank while on stage Friday.

Just digital and vinyl. You have to buy the book to get the mp3s though. Doesn't seem to be available yet through iTunes or streaming sites, etc..

the roy thompson hall show was incredible. i really am at a loss of words because nothing could adequately describe the emotion/atmosphere in that room that night.
it felt as though it was a million times more important than just a rock show. beyond special.

everyone holding on and depositing their tear stained tissues at the end of the the show, in those paper bags, so they could gather them and use them in a ceremony of sorts....wow

so many tears shed for chanie Cry Cry

gord's greatest legacy? we certainly hope so.
