Biggest Disappointment by Contemporaries of the Band
Rheostatics, “Bobcaygeon”. I couldn’t wait for this song to end. Blue Rodeo stayed truer to Gord’s phrasing and the song was better for it. I would have liked to have heard a different tune from the Rheos.

wholeheartedly agree with this. I find that Tielli seems to really struggle with singing ever since their last(?) show back in 2007. That last show at Massey Hall was really tough to listen too. Not sure if he was ill or something, but he was really struggling. Most live stuff I've heard since then seems to be the same.

Tielli actually had a bad cold the night of their final Massey Hall show, and his voice was in pretty rough shape as a result.

Years ago I interviewed him for my college newspaper, and the dude smoked like a chimney the entire time. Perhaps his recent vocal struggles are due to years of smoking finally catching up to him?

He actually had viral laryngitis. It was just really shitty luck and timing.
I've seen every one of the 11 shows in the past 16 months and honestly his voice is great. He is 9'years older and doesn't sing regularly but as a fan of the band I think he has sounded great. BobC was just not the best take of the song. The two run through takes were incredible. They didn't record them unfortunately.

Wow, I never realized it was that serious. I just remember reading that he was really sick and played the show anyway like a champ. I have the bootleg for that gig, and it's still one of my favorites, despite Tielli's vocal troubles. Such an emotional show. Also didn't know they were playing shows lately (I thought the Strombo thing was just a one-off). Any possibility of a new album in the works??

just listening now to the waterloo show from april of this year and you're right - his voice is sounding great.
glad to hear it wasn't anything permanent.

I haven't kept up with the Rheos (last time I saw them was opening for the Hip in 1996) so that version of BobC felt like Jordan playing in a Washington Wizards jersey... it left me feeling sad and with the thought that Tielli's prime was long past. Glad to hear that song wasn't a true reflection of his current singing status and that he's got some legs yet.

I've gotta also defend Rheostatics. I was a bit disappointed in their Bobcaygeon cover but Martin still sounds great these days (having seen the 2007 Massey Hall show and 3 shows in this past ?reunion year). He is a bit hit and miss, as he has always been, but can still knock it out of the park. I have a hunch he wakes up around 5pm so probably sounds best for late shows. After all, he absolutely crushed it out of the park with this recording of Bobcaygeon back in the 90's.
