direwolf74 Wrote:Cool song. Reminds me a bit of The Hold Steady, especially Gord's little rant after the first chorus. The Jack White/Tom Morello guitar solo is very different from what we're used to hearing from Rob Baker. It's kinda bizarre, but it's cool to see he's still stretching himself as a guitar player this far into his career. I like the guitars, the lyrics are great, and the chorus is ridiculously catchy. It's a very unique song for the Hip, and it definitely doesn't sound like anything they've done before. They said this album was going to have something for everybody and showcase the dynamic range of the band, and they weren't kidding. So far we've heard two wildly different songs from opposite ends of the spectrum. I like that. This song is gonna be amazing live.

Good points about Baker. The bass/guitars do sound good, so that looks to be a theme with Bob Rock and Rob, Paul, and Gord S. Gotta give Baker credit for laying some of those tracks, even though I 'm not sure how jazzed about the end result I am...

Also good points about the apparent range on the upcoming record. I think that's a good move for a band like the Hip at this point in their tenure. Lots of variety makes for an interesting record if not a widely-appealing one, and it gives license to do things they might have wanted to try but couldn't chance it earlier in their career.

As for LIAF itself, well.....I hope there are more things on the MM end of the spectrum. I like the verse parts well enough, and find that the choruses really do nothing for me at all (as opposed to what some others have said) ... i kinda find the to be a little annoying, but that is another mini trend in recent Hip stuff for me.

In general, I can live without the one 'edgy single' with the 'styling-du-jour', but if it's relegated only to "In View" on one record and "Love Is A First" on the next, then I'll be more than happy (I'm really liking MM after only a few listens)

No one take a stab at the lyrics yet or did I miss it?

I wasn't sure about this after the first listen. I loved Morning Moon from the first note. The more I hear LIAF, the better it sounds to me. Should be a fun one live!

I concur! This song WILL kick ass live. They can stretch that killer ending out a la On The Verge! Whoops, I just had a tiny orgasm :what

I'm afraid that after hearing this song a couple of times I have confirmed my initial suspicions that I had when hearing the 15 second blurb...I don't like it. To quote the song, it is as bad as or worse than I imagined it would be.
Having said that I think it will be a fun song to SEE live, I envision Gord going a little nuts on stage belting this one out and that will be its only saving grace.

Sorry to be so negative friends but I'm just not feeling the first 2 songs of this album. I know that there will be songs that I will love..but it won't be these 2.

Bold is words I'm not positive on. (?) = I have no clue.

I've been interpreted and shrunk
I've been as touchless as a drunk
This is as bad as or worse
as bad as or worse
This is as bad as or worse
as bad as or worse

Love is a curse
Be her board all it deserts
Love is a curse
Get what you can't not deserve

I know, I know it's all just first blurts
That he who try to own or deserves it
And I know it's got nothing to do with deserves it
Just that you don't just blurt, "love is a curse"
love is a curse
love is a curse
You don't just blurt, "love is a curse"

Though I've been too weak to escape
And I don't have the strength to pluck a grape
Though it's as bad as or worse
as bad as or worse
Though it's as bad as or worse
as bad as or worse

Love is a first
Felt the dull fangs of the truth
Love is a first
Their music they torture to
Love is a first
The song would powers it first
Love is a first
Let's walk down the darkness in skorts

We were frozen until he saw us
and smoke and murder fell on the floor
and watch the own death of your TV
and dreams are stuck in urgent tweads
Drain the ocean of words
like God's representatives on earth
Learn to hurt and how not to hurt
and the thing you taught me and what I learned
Love is a first

And it's as bad as or worse
Love is a first
As bad as or worse
Love is a first
As bad as or worse
Love is a first
As bad as or worse

Love is a curse
Be her wood all it deservs
Love is a first
Go where the curtain (?)
Love is a curse
Get what you can't not deserve
Love is a first
Not just what (?)

I know it's not "let's walk down the darkness in SKORTS" but that's all I can here. There's a few holes in there. Any help?

Morning Moon was good.

LIAF is absolutely stellar. Going to be an amazing hit this summer.
I am really just glad that this rant become a song in the end.

I give LIAF 4/10 upon first listen.

I think I' d give MM a 5/10 so far.

I am happy that The Hip are exploring new areas, as both songs are definitely pretty unique. I may come to love both songs in due time.

I just listened to it again and the only corrections I am pretty sure about, I highlighted in red. Even them, I'm not 100% sure about. It's tough to hear exactly what Gord is saying. You did a pretty good job.

MM=9/10
LIAF=5/10

LIAF really reminds me of U2 the last few albums. I think it is cool that they are taking a genuine stab at radio with this tune. The band needs a decent radio hit but I am really hoping the album is more mature and in line with MM. As I grow older I want something that challenges me from our fav band. MM had that "wow now this is different and headed down a new path sound"... LIAF has a deliberate mix and sound that says "we are really trying to fit in with what is in the top 40". Not that there is anything wrong with that...just not what I was hoping for. I am sure the song will kick ass live too though...as several has said on here....probably a better live song than MM will end up being...lol

This sums up exactly how I feel about the song.

It's funny, because you always hear the argument from die hard fans about how their band is "selling out" or changing their sound to fit in more with radio and I never really understood that. I don't want to get into the whole sell out discussion because I'm not suggesting that at all. But I've never understood how that pissed off fans so much (Modest Mouse, Kings of Leon etc.) because I've always viewed those bands as an outsider, or someone who liked the altered radio friendly sound because I became a fan during that period. I'm not saying I'm mad at the hip for making radio friendly songs and trying to fit into the mainstream to attract new fans, or that I will stop liking the new material, but I now understand the disdain fans have when a band alters their sound to fit into the mainstream and be radio friendly. I'm not saying that bands shouldn't alter their sound and evolve, but when they do it to blatantly sound like other bands and have a radio hit then it becomes an issue. And I'm not suggesting for a second that the Hip are doing that, because In View was the only song from World Container that I felt tried to be a radio friendly hit, and hopefully LIAF will be the only song from We Are The Same that is like that. Anyways, that's my feeling about LIAF.
