This was one for the memories. Hilarious antidotes, GD once again having his way with an interviewer, Lightfoot going deep with some stories (although sadly somewhat out of it during other times) INCREDIBLE sound... Wow. I will remember this night for a very long time.
Both GD and Lightfoot played 4 songs each. All told the event ran a pretty even 2 hours. The names of Lightfoot's first two songs escape me, but the second two were If You Could Read My Mind and Let It Ride. GD played Morning Moon, Willow Logic, Hard Canadian and Bobcaygeon.
Hard Canadian is from the new album with the Sadies, out in May. It was first played at an RBC gala before Christmas. GD told a story how you should never debut a song in front of bankers; all they did was talk. "It was like playing at the Horseshoe; 75 years of music and 75 years of people talking at the back of the room." Classic. As a song, watch out. If you listen to Radio 2 at all (and you should - it's as close to free-form radio as you'll get in North America), this song will be all over it come the summer. Once it has a backing band to it, it'll have a very Summer Is Killing Us kind of vibe to it (without all the things that people hate about that song).
I had never seen GD play Hip songs solo before, outside of the videos Mav has put up on the official site. It sounded to me as if he was simply playing his parts of the song, rather than the lead guitar lines. Well, that I'm certain of: he was not playing Rob's, or even Paul's parts during his versions. Morning Moon and Bob C were almost totally re-arrainged because of it. Moon was saved by a remarkable GD vocal, but Bob C was just as good. Different... but still just as good.
The moment of zen: no one cheering after the Toronto line. It was oddly comforting.
It'll be broadcast Easter Sunday on Radio 2. I hope to hell they keep the e-mail GD read aloud from his brother. He never said which one it was, but after GD revealed he was doing this evening with Lightfoot, one of them wrote and relayed the experience of hearing "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" for the first time.
Paraphrasing: "... we got to Bath by the time the song was done. I turned to him and said 'Holy Fuck, what was that?' We got some beer and smoked some grass and kept driving around hoping the radio would play the song for us again."
