I could defnitely see how he says it's glossed up and made to appear grander than it is though...
I think this album would be fantastic without it's overlayered sound. Honestly, on some songs it works but majority of the album is quite heavily layered. I think "Honey, Please" could really be a great song (I actually like it, but really is a bit too pop'ish for my taste). The Last Recluse was stripped down compared to most of the singles and I happen to believe that is their best song on WATS.
I also believe that out of how many songs (like 36 or something) out of what the Hip had in which they could have placed on the album, the fact that they chose "Now That Struggle Has A Name" was an awful decision.
I think a part that I missed from this album that I loved about their other albums is the fact that Johnny Fay couldn't hit us with the beats we know he can bang out. It's too mellow. And when they were posting their Bathouse videos, Johnny looked like he was killing it on the drums and none of those beats I could recognize on them. They were simple kick, snare, kick, snare, kick, snare, kick, crash beats. Kind of stole the fun out of the album because there isn't really any cool riffs guitar-wise in the songs besides perhaps the intro to Morning Moon and Frozen in my Tracks.
I really liked the album after a few listens as it grew on me.
But as for a lasting impression it's kind of shaky. I'm resorting back to songs like Emperor Penguin, Escape is at Hand, Pigeon Camera and Three Pistols.
You really can't get enough of Three Pistols...
