I understand your question but I wonder what exactly do you think they could have been done?
Nobody without expert training could have disarmed that man. The passengers who held the killer for three hours are heroes. In the face of unimaginable horror they held that madman at bay and saved God knows how many lives. The strength and courage of those men deserves to be rewarded.
