Better there than behind the Leafs bench...

Apparently Cliff Fletcher doesn't agree with you:

I thought the reason they fired Maurice was so that the new GM would have a clean slate and be able to hire his own guy :nooooo

If this turns out to be true I see Fletcher staying on for the entire season as GM paving the way for Brian Burke next year, seeing as the Leafs have been denied permission to speak to all the top GM's in the league so far, it would make sense to have a top coach in place now plus it gives them an excuse for not hiring a GM. Not that many of them would have taken the job anyway from what Ive read. If Fletcher stays on I think there's a greater chance Mats will return, unless the big money Detroit or Montreal would give him is too hard to turn down or so the rumors go... I see Mats in Detroit before anyone else, they only have to play Toronto once (in Detroit) so less media circus and he'll get to play with some of his top countrymen and have a real chance at the Cup or at the very least the playoffs. Not likely to happen in Toronto this season so I dont know why he would even waste his time going back unless he's that sentimental about the team. I doubt he would go for the "hometown" discount again seeing as other teams would be willing to pay at least 7-9 mil for his services for one or two seasons, it would make sense to part ways. But that would be one nice slap in the face to Leaf fans if Mats goes elsewhere, they really could have cashed in on him if he had waived his NTC and now to walk away and they get nothing that would be sweet!

Imagine a world before the "beginning was the word.”
