as a note to the photographers here, any recommendations on what lens I should be going for to add to the mediocre one I got with my EOS 400D

How much do you want to spend and what sort of shots do you want to get from it? I seem to remember you have the 400D kit lens, yes? Maybe you'd want something that covers a different focal length or is a bit faster.

You can get a really good, budget prime lens from Canon - the 50mm f1.8. I borrowed my mates one for a while and was really impressed with the results.

Yeah, that lens looks good, I was thinking of something for gig photography too, maybe a zoom, or maybe a nice wide angle lens.

I've got, or will have, around £200 to play with.
