i think the problem here is that gov't mule is in a more selective field of music... the infamous "jam band scene"
they are definitely not as widespread in Canada as the Hip, but have a much larger fanbase in the states than the Hip too (all the Allman Bros Band fans come out to Mule's shows too)
the two types of music are fairly different...the hip versus southern rock
that being said, ive seen both these bands a number of times (the hip 10 and mule 8) and in terms of who puts on a "better" show...that entirely depends on what you're looking for
mule is an amazing band with one of the world's best guitarists. they guarentee 2 sets of music every night, a stellar light show and will rarely play the same song 2 nights in a row (they are excellent at mixing up the setlist).
i dont need to describe what the hip do, since everyone here knows.
all in all...i think gov't mule puts on a better live show (they are not necessarily a better band)
ive seen them 3 times since sept 14th and 6 times since this june
something about going to a show and not hearing the "greatest hits" or 8-10 repeats on back to back nights is highly appealing
no song is guarenteed at a Mule concert...
whereas I feel it's a special occasion if I go through a Hip concert without hearing Blow, NOIS, M@W or ABAC
mule's diversity wins them my vote
the hip are on par in terms of an energetic concert + lighting
they just need to mix things up a little bit more to make seeing them on back to back nights more interesting
