As far as I can tell, the whole point of the Hip, for example, is the thrill they get from making music with friends, and earning a living doing it. If they were concerned about making their music "accessible" then they'd be on their 6th version of Fully Completely.

I'm not naive (or stupid) enough to think that the vast majority of bands out there aren't pandering to the lowest common denominator in an effort to pad their bank accounts and screw supermodels, but there are many bands who are in it for the thrill of making music. I count the Hip to be among them.
