I think the easiest way to do it is to shell out $30 and get Quicktime Pro.

Use that to do the cropping and then use a free program called MPEG Streamclip to convert the file to the format you want.

Or.... get MPEG Streamclip and convert the file to a .dv file and then import it to iMovie and crop it to the length you want. Export from iMovie and then use MPEG Streamclip to compress the file for emailing.
