I have been sayen the same thing about how it was in the contex of a comedy act. Paul Mooney (who used to write for Richard Prior/ Dave Chapell) was one of the people that first started to use that word to remove its power. He understands now that the word will never loose it's negative context and has vowed to stop. I think Richards was trying to be funny/shocking and he was upset by them heckeling, but the world will never be ok with a white man saying that word nore should we be.
