That richness is part of what makes it a terrific song.
For my part, I think the song isn't about a relationship failing or succeeding per se; it's about fighting to keep the relationship from failing. We WANT to "be it." That doesn't mean we ARE it. That's what the struggle is.
"Drip drip" works as that water torture of time, corroding the relationship, but the aspiration remains intact by the end of the song, and so does the relationship itself: WE'RE STILL HAPPENING AS WE SPEAK being one of my favourite lines in late-era Hip, just the passion with which its delivered and the defiance it conveys.
The song gives us no final resolution. It could go either way. But we know it's not, and won't be easy.
That's the reason why Gord's "extreme" vocal is so effective in this song. The lyrics call forth that intensity.
