Michael Richard's Tirade
#29

He was wrong to make the comment but probably 70 percent of people make racial slurs. I've heard plenty of black people call white's "whiteboy", and plenty of white people call black people the "N" word. Where do you draw the line? Dave Chappelle makes racist remarks about whites all the time. Is there a line in comedy?

I'd say Richards was pretty much across that line, wherever it is, double standards notwithstanding. There's not really any debate that he should apologize.

The bigger question, for me, is whether he really deserves everything that's going to follow. Think he'll get a TV role any time in the next couple of years?

In his standup career, he's probably dealt with thousands of hecklers. So what was it about this one?

That's the question. Maybe he had a bad day. Maybe he was irritated and thought it would be funny to lose his temper. Maybe he's just a racist and hates black people. Maybe he did it to get publicity.

An issue for me is that people are going to make such a huge deal about this. It's ONE THING Mike Richards said one night doing stand up comedy. He is 57 years old. I mean, is this really an important issue? Why are people so affected by this? I'm sure there are millions of african americans that are outraged. For what? Something some guy who is a complete stranger said about black people? People need to lighten up. This isn't even a story to me, regardless of whether I'm white or black or whatever. It's the same with Mel Gibson. So what if he made a remark about Jews? Who cares what his opinion is anyway? Oprah comes off as a racist to me but you don't see people complaining about her. What about Al Sharpton and his "pro black" thinking? Why are these things turned into such big stories?
