Turns out it's been a wonderful giftshop that was just waiting for me to notice and explore. Now that I've discovered how grand the bounce of this record really is, I'm trying to savor it slowly and stretch that thing. Make it last, make it last, at least til the supper bell rings. Because the reality is, even with the latest gifts he left us there's a finite supply of "new" GD brilliance to unwrap and explore and I'm not prepared to get to the end of everything.Glad you re-discovered The Grand Bounce. It's my favourite GD record and, IMO, one that could arguably be ranked higher than a couple of Hip albums. There is some beautiful imagery in the lyrics on that one.
Anyway, I found a little clever nugget that I will be looking to drop, from Retrace: "High as an elephant's eye." I don't think I've heard that one before. Anyone know if this is this a GD original or something he borrowed? So maybe my story will be something like "we were high, we were Sherpa high, high as an elephant's eye." Or we can debate, which is higher? Sherpa or elephant's eye? Either way, I'm in.
p.s. did he invent the notion of "Sherpa high" or just use it?
"High as an elephant's eye" is from the musical Oklahoma (song "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning", line "The corn is as high as an elephant's eye"). As for "Sherpa High", I don't know if he borrowed that from somewhere, but it sounds like a GD original.
