Yer (B-Side) Favourites: Creating a Hip B-Side Album
#1

The most interesting aspect of a potential B-side album will be all the songs I’ve yet to hear from the DFN/TATH/PP era, if such songs do indeed exist. I’d also love to hear what was left off IBE. “Hush” and “Skeleton Park” were rightly not worthy of inclusion on either WC or WATS and if those represent the best outtakes of the Bob Rock era, I’m not overly optimistic about hearing any B-side gems from that time period.

Working with songs I do know exist (some of which admittedly may not have a proper studio take), I thought it would be interesting to see what a B-side album could look like. Although I’m hoping for something more along the lines of a 30 song Pearl Jam “Lost Dogs” album, I’m going with the standard 12 song format, in chronological order (to the best of my knowledge for the earlier tunes):

1. Reformed Baptist Blues
2. Wait So Long
3. Get Back Again
4. Crack My Spine Like a Whip
5. It’s Just as Well
6. Anchor on a Thread
7. Scathed
8. Montreal
9. Blonde Solid
10. Radio Show (on FC re-issue, but would like to see it included on a full B-sides album)
11. Problem Bears
12. Ultra Mundane

This is a pretty solid album and I would expect that at least 4-5 of these tunes would make the cut for an actual Hip B-side album. However, if I was to try to place this hypothetical B-side album in my personal Hip catalogue ranking, I’m not sure it surpasses anything other than maybe NFPA. That being said, if a tight studio take of Montreal exists, that alone could certainly make it rise higher. I believe that song to represent the best of their unreleased material.
