Gord Downie - Secret Path

Agreed. I love the simplicity of the lyrics in Here, Here and Here. So much is said with so few words. Very powerful. The “You sign, here, here and here” line is perfect – it draws from expression we’ve all heard in our lives, the mundane process of signing a legal document (be it a purchase or the signing a medical document) and making it official. In the context here, after all this intense human drama and tragedy, what is being signed? And who is signing it? The death certificate? The Truth and Reconciliation agreement? Or is it a metaphorical signing, as in we as a nation signed off on these residential schools? Maybe all of the above. I’m reminded of lyrics from Now The Struggle Has a Name, which I always assumed were (at least in part) about Truth and Reconciliation, “Now the apology done…applause can begin.” I always took this to be Gord’s facetious way of saying, “Well, the Canadian government has officially apologized for residential schools, we’re all good now, right?” ...much like signing whatever is being signed in Here, Here and Here. "Well, this settles everything, right? We move on?" Obviously not. The tragedy still exists, only now it has a name. Chanie Wenjack. Beautifully devastating song. (That's my take anyway).
