i heard somebody on tsn saying that taking out the red line could actually hurt goal scoring because in college hockey it was tried and players would just fall back and lineup at the blueline and wait for the other team to attack...

Scotty Bowman has been saying that for years. He said no two line passes encourage trapping (send in one four checker, sit four guys back and hope for a turnover).
