I myself think the Hip came close to cracking on M@W - NOT a pleasant record to make by some accounts, and it was fairly badly received, too. We shouldn't confuse the 'official story' of eternal friendship and unity with the messy facts on the ground, which include things like getting sick of each others' faces on long tours, a natural desire to try new things with new people, etc.. Anyway, long may they run.
