I was listening to the 96 Cleveland show this morning on my way to work, and I was reminded how amazing that tour really was. I'll go out on a limb and say that was the Hip at their peak. That's not to say they have diminished in talent or anything, just that I feel they were at the peak of their Canadian popularity then.
I was at the Saskatoon show for that tour and it still stands out as one of the best I've seen...18 shows so far in total. What I remember the most was the crowd was really into the Hip and extremely participatory(sp?) for almost every song. It seemed people knew the lyrics for every song, even the new ones off Henhouse, and sang them out for the whole show. Scared really stands out in my mind because not only was the crowd singing, but everybody was clapping in unison for the whole song. Something about a packed arena clapping and singing in unison that is just amazing.
Listening to the Cleveland show (great job whoever recorded it!) brought back a lot of those memories. You can clearly hear the crowd singing along to many of the songs, something you don't get on many bootlegs.
