'Hey, listen, the business has changed, these guys are a great band, there's a reason why they're still around, they just need to make a better record and I think you can do it.'

I don't really think I agree with the end of that statement by Bruce Allen. The Hip have made a ton of great records and that's why the are still around!

Replace the word "better" with "more commercial" and I think I know Allen's reason for what he said. I don't think quality even matters to Bruce Allen. Sales do.
