This one just made let out a very audible "Holy shit" in the office.

Okay. So Road Apples came out Feb. 1991 and was recorded in September 1990. I'd place the show around that time.

Why? For one, it includes Scathed, a Road Apples outtake never known to have been played live. As for the other choice "Mother's Gal," that may be a song the fandom is not familiar with.

Also, the set list is really similar to the Misty Moon special, with a couple of changes. Times Are Passing Us By instead of Get Back Again and the JJ Cale cover "I'll Make Love To You Anytime"

So, sometime spring/summer 1990? That'd be my guess.

Some more info. I used to go see Jack De Keyzer every New Years at the Horseshoe Tavern in the late 80's early 90's. If memory serves me correct I grabbed this off the stage before one of those New Year's Eve shows. Did The Hip not do secret shows back then just before NYE for a couple of years there? I can't find any mention of it online when searching.
I should also note that the other side of the setlist is a playbill from the Horseshoe for a Jo-El Sonnier show that was dated August 24, 1988, but I know they had lots of old playbills lying around downstairs there that bands would use to write out sets.

An advantage to working at Postmedia (and the former Sun Media) is the access to a fairly extensive digital text archive.

This, from the Jan. 5, 1991 Toronto Sun:

ICE CREAM MAN: Are high-flying rockers The Tragically Hip, who played to an overflow Horseshoe crowd last week, being recognized in their home town?

''I got ice cream bought for me at Baskin-Robbins in Kingston last summer,'' recalls drummer Johnny Fay. ''So my mom says we must be famous.''

The timeline syncs, but I don't think the setlist does. Too many unreleased songs not about to be released on Road Apples in there. I'd argue this is much more likely to be a late 1989 show, in that case.

I'm pretty sure they did the surprise gigs a couple of years in a row at the Horseshoe, so perhaps is was late December '89.
