Lately, Mean Streak has been kicking my ass, and it hasn't before.
Same with Throwing Off Glass....

Music can be about time and place, when In Between Evolution came out I was in just purchased a new house mode, but I dutifully picked up the album and was shocked when it did not work for me…

and so began the five stages, Denial, this isn't happening - play the CD again... Anger, why is this happening - play the damn CD again. Then I started Bargaining... I sure it will grow on me if I just - pay the CD again, this gave way to Depression, perhaps the Hip have out grown me, perhaps I am no longer a true fan, finally Acceptance arrived, no I am a fan and all of this worrying over IBE is not getting the living room painted (actually my partner said that part!) – so I tossed on some Beatles (Don’t Let me Down) and started painting..

About six months ago I heard As Makeshift As We Are and thought what a great tune so I scrambled to locate the CD, found it in between Joshua Tree and No Sleep 'til Hammersmith... tossed it on and it was in rotation for a long long while

You know, back when Road Apples came out I wasn't crazy about it. I remember thinking that the Hip had lost their edge and were getting too soft. I put it on the shelf and didn't listen to it for a long time. Then about a year or so after that, I had it in the car for a road trip and played the hell out of it and it instantly became my favorite and remained so until Phantom Power came out.

Chris Tanz Wrote:Q to Horrible Esthete, is it just that part you don't like or the initial one as well ("the fates are amok and spun ..."). I prefer the second one to the first, because Gord sounds just that much more demented on it, even though it lacks the "holy f**k, it's jesus" exclamation point.

Sorry Tanz, I hadn't seen seen this post. It's both parts. I elaborate in a reply to Direwolf a few pages back...

googolplex Wrote:Strange how some people don't like the Drop Off. That chorus (I wouldn't really call the fast bit the chorus I'd say the chorus is the "don't go swimming past the drop off or ellllllsssse" bit) is just unbelievably awesome in my books.

I wondered to myself about whether or not that is the "chorus". The term itself emerges from the practice of additional band (or choir) members joining the lead vocalist (or soloist) to sing a repeated "stanza" of music that is distinct from the verse structure and is typically more dynamic and dramatic. Often times, the "chorus" is used synonymously with the term "refrain", but I was taught that in popular music, a refrain and a chorus are not one in the same. I did some research for the benefit of myself and anyone else who might be interested.

Wikipedia provides some explanation:

A pop chorus is not the same as a refrain. At least one well-known writer on pop-song-writing theory has stated this, for example, (Davis, 1990) says that a refrain musically and lyrically resolves a verse and therefore ends it, whereas a chorus begins a distinctively new music section of at least eight bars. A refrain is often a two line repeated lyrical statement commenting on the preceding verse, for example:

"Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down. Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down"
or
"The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind, The answer is blowin' in the wind".
or
"All the lonely people, where do they all come from? All the lonely people, where do they all belong?"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refrain

This leads me to conclude that the "Don't go swimmin past the drop-off" part is a refrain whereas the parts containing the "The surface is green and the dark interweaves" bit is the chorus, so to speak, but I'm certainly not an authority on this...

Thus, in attempt to label the entire song's structure, I'd be inclined to do something like this, where there are 3 verses, each ending with a refrain that is slightly modified for each verse (Gord has a history of doing this sort of thing), and 2 instances of the chorus, of which the first 2 lines are unique to each instance, but the last 2 lines are identical:

[VERSE 1]
When the summer is young
and nobody has their prices
No one is no one
and nobody in a crisis

[REFRAIN]
There’s no swimming past the drop-off
or feeling sorry for yourself
Ya don’t go swimming past the drop-off
or else

[VERSE 2]
Yer a pistol, yer a gun
and suddenly I have no prices
I’m like a friend of Dylan’s
our shovels meeting in some crisis

[REFRAIN (with a slight modification)]
But there’s no swimming past the drop-off
Yea we don’t replace ourselves
Ya don’t go swimming past the drop-off
or else

[CHORUS 1]
The fates are amok and spun, measured and cut and the past is meant to please us
Yer a comet from earth in a Kiss Alive shirt saying, ‘holy fuck, it’s jesus!?’
The surface is green and the dark interweaves in a lonely iridescence
It’s terribly deep and the cold is complete and it only lacks a presence
and nothing else.

[VERSE 3]
When the summer is done
and nobody sympathizes
Yer no friend of Dylan’s
Yea, you won’t see another crisis

[REFRAIN (with slight modification #2)]
There’s no swimming past the drop-off
or feeling sorry for ourselves
Ya don’t go swimming past the drop-off
or else

[CHORUS 2]
Personal stakes will get raised and get raised til your story gets compelling
If you lacked the sense or were willfully dense is forever in the telling
The surface is green and the dark interweaves in a lonely iridescence
It’s terribly deep and the cold is complete and it only lacks your presence
and nothing else
nothing else
nothing else
and no one else

i've been listening to the album for a few weeks now...totally fucking incredible, in my humble opinion.
i know it's been said, but world conatainer to me is much like luke on dagaboh for the first time...something familar like a dream...It has fully completely echoing all around it!
but the craftmanship is second to none...the tragically hip make me proud to be canadian!
drop off rings of the werewithal
my favourite by far is last nite, i mean come on! this is pure emotion!
many people i know only like the hip's older stuff...it reminds me of my mother only liking the beatles early stuff...it truly takes a higher appreciation, and i personally thank the hip for this jem, and can't wait for JAN.10! it's gonna be awesome, just like the old days!

this album is fucking incredible

it puts IBE, IVL and especially M@W to shame....

I must have listened to Family Band like 1000000 times at work tonight, repeat, repeat, repeat...

i find that WC is a culminating album...it makes sense of the previous three in many ways...

It has the unrestrained fearless/adventurous imagination and spirit of Music@Work...best displayed by Ocean and Pretend...with their undenaible and unapologetic meoldies. The intensity, focus, and raw emotion of IBE are on display as well, but this time, instead of sounding like they're on fire, scorching everything in their path...they sound like an ice storm...with cold calculation and icy precision being the order of the day. Finally, there's a very intimate and poignant feel to the album...both lyrically, and just the way the songs sound...as though Gord is singing to you one on one...which is what reminds me most of IVL. IMO, The Darkest One, or IAGLIYDW, would sound right at home on WC, and vice versa, I think In View and Fly would slide in perfectly somewhere on IVL...

You know what??? Besides Yer Not the Ocean, I am not impressed w/ World Container after a week. I think that IBE is a far far better album... in terms of their recent stuff of course. Anyone else with me? Or am I being overly critical???

Nope, I can't agree to that... I still love the groove in Lonely and the beatiful pacing and rhythm of Family Band. The rest is great too (I sometimes skip over Pretend).... I like it a lot more than IVL and IBE....

i'm surprised that after a week you're still not diggin it...BUT, give it more time, i'm 100% sure it will...Family Band, Kids, Drop-OFf, In View and Rink will all surely be kicking your ass before you know it...

As much as i love this album, I think that IBE is a better disc

when is all said and done I think IBE will be seen as it should be the 10th official release

One of the Criticisms of World Container is that the album is too short. I was wondering if by adding the two "new" songs of Hipeponymous to World Container would make the album a better album.
The Track Listing would go something like this:
1.Yer Not the Ocean
2.The Lonely End of the Rink
3.In View
4.New Maybe
5.Fly
6.Luv (sic)
7.The Kids Don't Get It
8.Pretend
9.No Threat
9.Last Night I Dreamed You Didn't Love Me
10.The Drop Off
11.Family Band
12.World Container

How do you feel this would stack up to the current situation?

as much as No threat kicks ass, i'd still take IBE over WC

Shane, you're right about that criticism. The album is too short for my liking. I'm not sure which album I like more between IBE and WC. I like all the Hip albums so it isn't that important which one is better than the other. I think if I had to choose my favourite between the two, I'd pick IBE as of this moment.

No question where I stand...IBE is in the top-three Hip records. Off the floor, urgent, tight, demented, imaginative. What it's NOT is slick. And that's what WC is, slick to the hilt - which of course is the whole problem. However, 'Kids Don't Get It' is fantastic. And I've negotiated a pleasant enough relationship with

-Ocean, despite its overproduction
-Rink, although I still don't get any real emotion out of it
-Drop Off, once I got over the fact that it would sound better if Gord had sung in a lower register
-Family Band

That makes five enjoyable songs vs. a record that, apart from the Dan Snyder tune, is basically indestructable from start to finish. A mismatch all the way. However, your stance on this probably depends on what KIND of music you dig: spontaneous and urgent, over manicured and super-produced. :jump
