World Container Reviews - Official Thread

longseason Wrote:Free place to stay here near Toronto if you ever come to visit!

Oh thank you very much. Where do you live? Hamilton?

I was in Toronto in 1999. I love that town. I was there for one week. Too short to see everything but I saw the Leafs vs Lightning (6:1). That was great. I am a big NHL fan. Normally my favorite team are the Flyers but my heart really beats for the Leafs too since I was there.

And I bought all missing Hip CDs at SamTheRecordman !! Great shop.

First off I love the Drop off (so no dropping the virtual gloves)
yet when I hear the vocal I do have that synapse - if only the vocal was more akin to Family/Fly the song would be that much better.
Not to mention that my non-hip-lovin-friends (everyone has em I suspect) hear TDO especially the “and nothing else” they gleefully say there it is… there it is, the voice that makes me --- (insert lame verb here)

so to recount - love the Drop overall as a tune but love the vocals on songs like Family and Fly just wee bit more...

The kids don´t get it is growing more and more. I really like that tune now.

But my favs are At the lonely end of the rink and Luv (sic). The beginning of ATLEOTR is fabulous. I really like that rock attitude.

Hey, the video of In view is really cool, isn´t it?

The video for "In View" is great. :thumb:

"The Dropoff" doesn't sound anything like "Fly" so obviously Gord's vocals are going to be different. I love Gord's vocals on every song, especially "FB" and "Flyl" but on "The Dropoff", his vocals give the song a demented edge to go along with the music.

I cannot stop those lines from racing through my head.

For me, the cadence / delivery of these lines is irritating, and thus diminishes my overall appreciation of an otherwise great song.

I wish he would've done something entirely different with chorus structure in TDO.

It's interesting that what may be irritating to one person is total ear candy to someone else. I don't find that part irritating at all. In fact it's my favorite part of the song. It's a big, powerful, knock-you-on-your-ass rock tune, and I think Gord's vocal phrasing fits the song to a tee. If you listen to what the band is playing behind him during that particular part, I don't think you could sing those lines any other way and make them fit or get the same impact. The band would have to change the arrangement of the song, and if they did that it would ruin MY appreciation of an otherwise great song.

Yeah...it's funny to think that amongst millions of music lovers worldwide, such a small percentage share a devotion to one particular band, yet individuals amongst that relatively small group can have almost opposite tastes at times regarding that artist's cataloge or style.

You're right - it's not just Gord's vocal treatments, its the entire structure of the chorus that I don't like. I love the guitar & bass riffs and also like the percussion pattern that the song begins with and sustains through the verses, but I'm almost completely turned off by the chorus. I certainly would never say that the chorus doesn't match the flow or style or attitude of the song; I would admit that it "fits", probably perfectly for the band's overall song concept. It dials the energy-level up from "fevered" to "manic", which is probably precicely what they wish to do. But for me, it's enough to push it right over the edge. In my perspective, TDO starts and progresses like a a tightly-wound rope of sonic power, and at the chorus, it just frays and unravels, when I personally wish it would just sustains that straight, even keel.

But that's just me and my personal preference, which amount to nothing more than a speck of dust in this space we've come to know as the World Container.

Gotta say I'm also not a huge fan of TDO (though listening to it at this very moment I think I might be coming around a bit...) Otherwise I've gotten into every other song and love most of em, except the lyrics of LEOTR.

I think In View may rival Poets as their best single ever. I can't believe some people don't like this song!!!!!!

Me thinks it has something to do with the friggin xylophone...brings back memories of marching band!

Also, the lyrics in Poets are much more in a spoken word/storytelling vein of poetry while In View's lyrics are pretty simple to decipher (except for the tail end of the song) and kinda blase in my opinion.

WTF!?!?!?!?!

now THAT, is absurd! to each their own...but yeesh, taht's borderline treason man!

i can almost understand how one could not really like M@W, it's kinda weird at times...although, i find it to be wonderfully so, which is its true beauty...it's unrestrained imagination and seemingly infinite soundscapes and textures...

IVL is a brilliant masterpiece, so much vision for this one, so focused...sure its a bit mellow compared to their previous standards, but Silver Jet, The Darkest One, Use It Up, The Dark Canuck, and All Tore Up are all quite rockin...and melodic at the same time...not to mention the mellower tunes are all drop-dead gorgeous (all of them!)...i know that a lot of people were aa lil annoyed with are You Ready, but IMO, it boasts excellent lyrics, and wonderful vocals...in fact, vocally, i think IVL is easily the best Gord's ever done!

IBE...now this is where i get really confused...how could you not like this record!?!?!?!?!?! IT DOES IT ALL! have you even heard it? it boggles the mind... Confusedcratch:

Strange how some people don't like the Drop Off. That chorus (I wouldn't really call the fast bit the chorus I'd say the chorus is the "don't go swimming past the drop off or ellllllsssse" bit) is just unbelievably awesome in my books.

I Can't imagining not loving any of their songs. I guess I most be the only true fan.

Remember in order to get hits like The Dropp Off or In View, the band has to make some slow more melodic songs. From those songs stems the hits.

This album is getting better and better with each listen, something I couldn't say with IBE- which is the only album I skip around when listening to. IVL kicks ass IMO...

Question: I Dropoff, does somebody say something after GD says "I’m like a friend of Dylan’s"...something like F&^K OFF! ??? am I crazy?"

He says "Bob dylan"

You're joking right??

I consider myself as true a Hip fan as there ever can be, but there are a some songs I don't love, and, god forbid, that I even dislike. It happens and i think it is pretty natural occurance. Not loving a song is in absolutely no way an indication that you're not a "true fan".

Hogwash, nonsense, poppycock, poop...that's what that is.

All I am saying is that I love each song that they put out because of the process of generating hits. I know that you are probably a true hip fan as everyone on this site is, maybe the quote only true hip fan was a bit much.

Go back and listen to the songs that you are not in love with and I am sure they will gain in popularity with you.
