Albums you've recently rediscovered

direwolf74 Wrote:Weeping Tile- Cold Snap.

Definitely one of my favorite Canadian albums of all time. I LOVED this band. My favorite Weeping Tile memory is a show they did in Calgary back in '96 or '97. For the encore they all switched instruments (with Sarah on drums) and played an amazing cover of the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" that absolutely brought the house down. Even better was my friend Kim and I enjoying a round of beers with the entire band and chatting with them for a while after they opened for the Skydiggers at Wild Bill's in Banff. Good times!

one of my favourite bands too! they did the same thing at a show in halifax once - that sabotage cover was killer! i got to hang out with sarah harmer for an hour or so drinking some wine and talking music after the show. she explained to me that she wrote "westray" on a trip to the east coast after the mine disaster. she'd been reading "barometer rising" and some of the ideas for the song came to her as they were driving over the bridge into halifax and she filled in some more while driving to cape breton and passing the area.

great band and great people too, eh?

westray is my favourite track on cold snap, i think...but that whole album is a classic! :thumb:

Buffalo Tom- Sleepy Eyed

One of my favorite bands from the 90s, and this album was definitely the best thing they ever did. Loud, punchy guitars, raw live-off-the-floor production, and most improtantly- amazing songs with wonderful melodies and catchy hooks that jam their barbs into your skull and refuse to let go. Key tracks: Tangerine, Summer, Kitchen Door, Your Stripes, Sparklers, and Sundress.

I've been on a Bruce kick of late, so my submissions are

Bruce Spingsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town, The River and Nebraska. They're all great albums for very different reasons. I challenge anyone to listen to "Badlands" and tell me Bruce doesn't kick ass.

Also, given recent romantic developments, I've devoted a fair amount of time to "I'm on Fire". Lovely, burning and oh so perfect.

Left and Leaving recently regained its spot as the only album I ever feel like listening to. That and Day For Night are the only albums I ever get like that with.

I'd go so far as to say Left and Leaving is the album with which I identify most. The lyrics are simple (not obtuse) and not stupid, a difficult line to strattle. While the Hip are obviously my favorite band, there is no time that Gord connects with me lyrically like John K. does on this entire album. He, and they, really got it right on L and L. I love their other stuff, but it isn't quite the same. Not that it should be, but it's just not at the same level to me.

I dug up these two albums out today while re-organizing my music collection, and I realised its been a very long time since I listened to them, and wow what a listen, I forgot how kick ass these were, Jerry Cantrell's solo work is fantastic. There's some really great songs in those albums, if anyone hasn't heard them its worth the listen. Particularly if you were an AIC fan. These are my favorites from both,

Angel Eyes
Devil By His Side
Hellbound
Dickeye
My Song
She Was My Girl
Anger Rising
Cut You In
Hurts Don't It?
Gone

I pulled out The Traveling Wilbury's Vol 1 the other day. I haven't listened to it in a very long time and was it ever a nice treat. Talk about an all-star band!

Any of you young Hipbase whipper-snappers...go buy or borrow this album and listen to it now!
