I'd like to add that to go along with Mark's 187 hip shows he see's numerous other bands many times throughout the year, it's not just the hip that he follows closely. Most of the shows he goes to are within a driving distance that he feels comfortable making after/before work. And thanks to Mark's ability to go to so many shows we have recordings from many shows that we would probably wouldn't have without his efforts. As Chris said I too would gladdly ride shotgun with Mark on these trips. This year alone I flew to Vancouver for 1 show, then drove to Pittsburgh and Lewiston with Mark, Flew half way around the world to see them in Europe. I may have "sacrificed" some of my vacation time for the hip but it was well worth it. The hip are a few bands I would follow around this much, I saw the Tea Party about 50 times and that was without travelling to far. The biggest "sacrifice" I've made for any of the concerts I go to is the lack of sleep, which when I've promised to myself that I will catch up on that when I'm old and find "rock" music too loud.

I think I recall Mark telling me the first time he saw the hip was around 1993 or 1991. If you divide 187 by 13 years of seeing the hip, that really only works out to about 14 shows a year and also take into consideration that he went to pretty much the whole 2002 tour (55 shows or something).
If you factor out 2002, it would be 132 shows divided by 12 years = about 11 hip shows a year. That's dooable.

Totally doable... I'll see 9 this year without much effort. And I missed Guelph, Lewiston and Pittsburgh...

Ah, well there you go.
10 shows a year is easily 'doable', even for me with a full-time job, 2 weeks of vacation a year, and living in Ohio.
Seeing an entire North American tour (like he did in 2002) would have been a physical impossibility for me at ANY stage of my life (you can't do that and hold any conventional job) nor could I ever have been able to swing 30-some shows between June and December in a given year like he did in 2004.
There's no way I could ever have accomplished those two runs without either 1) working my ass off for great wage for a long while, then quitting or taking leave from that job to "tour", or 2) someone subsidizing me.
Plain and simple.
But mor power to him. It's something I'd love to do if I could.....

I have met many of the people posting in this thread at Hip shows more than once. I thank Mark Slogget for sharing many of his recordings with the Hip community. Chris, Chris gets a big thank you for all of his recordings also and the creation of the HipTracker. I should be able to see a few more shows this fall and winter. I am hoping that coaching my son's travel hockey team does not prevent me from seeing any of the shows near me on this tour.
