It's finals week. I graduate in a scant 11 days. I am trying my best to balance studying and relaxation. I have spent most of the day pouring over useless geology information in preparation for my final tomorrow. I decided that my break would be watching my beloved BoSox on ESPN. After a bumpy start, the boys come alive in the 2nd inning. The bases are loaded, there is only one out...and ESPN cuts to Barry Bonds at bat. Bonds manages to dick around at the plate. The brilliant analysts pick apart said bumbling, then comment on his little batting practice mishap. Once they're done their clucking, the return to the Sox game. We...accomplished nothing. Nada has changed since they cut away, but it's the principle of the whole thing. 5 hits, 3 runs... Gah. Thanks ESPN. Thanks finals week. :x

Just another on a huge list of reasons to hate ESPN.
I realize that ESPN wouldn't be up Barry Bonds ass, or up the Duke Blue Devils' ass, or up the Yankees' ass, if somebody out there (lots of somebodies, actually) wasn't interesting in seeing them constantly -- but who are these people? I sure as hell don't want to see every Bonds at-bat.
I sure as hell don't want to see Duke basketball games twice a week from November to March, either. And no offense honey, but I don't want to see every game of every Yanks / Sox series either. But at least with these GAMES, I can choose not to watch....but still enough people do for them to keep showing them for ratings' sake. But i don't understand how they can gauge how much of an audience tuning in to watch a BoSox/Blue Jay game doesn't mind cutting away to every Bonds at-bat -- my guess is that MOST despise it.
And that's what really pisses me off -- ESPN frequently pushes their agendas upon captive audiences -- and that agenda is often to create interest or controversy through overkill and oversaturation, in effort to generate ratings in the future....because it appears that sports fans will tune in even to watch things they grow to despise. So naturally, ESPN blatantly tries to make us hate things.
That may sound ridiculous, but I swear it's true.

I really, truly, hate ESPN. For all of the reasons Esthete mentioned, and a lot more. It continues to amaze me that people who are savvy digesters of media outlets continue to adore ESPN. I have friends who rant and rave about the biased news outlets - framing the war in Iraq, telling you only what they want you to hear, but then they go and take ESPN as gospel. F that. They are the largest, most biased thing to ever hit sports since, well...ever. If SportsCenter was truly just a recap of the day's events in sports, it wouldn't be an hour long and it wouldn't be full of editorial pieces about steroids and stupid shit like that. The only time I will ever watch ESPN is during live telecasts, and even then you are totally dicked by ridiculous announcers and cuts to Bonds at-bats (as mentioned by Jenna). I hate everything about ESPN. I hate the people on it, and I hate what it has done to sports. I hate it, and I won't stand for it. People who are truly fans of sports should do themselves a favor and STOP WATCHING ESPN. Major League Baseball is amazing right now - some of the best athletes to ever play the game are playing RIGHT NOW. Unfortunately, sports fans are too busy staying home listening to a bunch of reject-journalist talking heads yammer on about what is wrong with college sports or MLB of whatever. F that. Do you like sports? Then GO TO THE GAMES. Some of the greatest thinkers of our times have told us to question where authority comes from, questions what we hear/see/read. Want to be a sports fan? - go watch it live! It's amazing! I go to a sporting event whenever it is financially possible, but when I have to watch my beloved Tribe from home, it kills me that they draw one of the smallest crowds in baseball despite having the majors #1 offense. This is fun to watch people! Enjoy it! If I didn't live over 2 hours from Cleveland I swear I would be there everyday. As it is, I live in Columbus, and I haven't missed an Ohio State home football game in many years. It's a spectacle to watch, and I don't need Lee Corso to tell me that. I don't need Dan Patrick to tell me what is wrong with Ohio State football. I know what is wrong! I'm there! We need better offensive line play!!!

Like you, I pretty much restrict my ESPN viewership to live broadcasts. I'm certainly not going to miss a game they're airing, just because I loathe them. But I will curse them incessantly. :mrgreen:
Really though...they are trying to elicit this reaction. I don't need to tell you -- as a Buckeye fan -- you know that they go to great lengths to rile us up. Why? Because incensing the largest alumni association in the USA = ratings, and ratings = $$$$.
Too bad only a minority of Buckeye Nation tries our best to avoid watching as a result of this ploy. :?
