i think that it doesnt really matter if it is leaked on here since nearly all of us will buy it anyway. its not like gord is being ripped off as far as the number of discs sold.

I'm not too sure about this poll Lance. Of course I'm going to buy the album like every other hip fan on the hipbase forum. I'm just wondering why this was made a poll question unless it's known that the album has leaked? Are you saying it's out there or something?

I don't know how to feel about this either. What if it is leaked, we download it, don't like it and then don't end up buying it? He loses out all together. Then again, artists don't make much from their album sales anyway, do they? I was always under the impression that they made all of their money by touring.

thehip11, there is a post in this forum http://forum.hipbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=808 where you can download a song from the album. I would myself consider this a 'leaked' song, The entire album may not be leaked but one song was..
I saw a graph once of where record sales go.. It mentioned tons of things like recording fees, agents, record label but it did not mention the artist whatsoever.. So its my impression that artists make money from signing to the record label and then from touring. As well I'm sure they kick backs on merchandise sales etc.. If they sell X records I'm sure they get some sort of bonus as well. Then again I could very well likely be wrong..
Anyone out there know for sure how record sales are divied up?

yeah, I think that you sign on for say 4 records for x amount of dollars.
But I would think that you would get royalties for every record that is sold?
Probably not much though.
I'm sure you would make money from touring etc...but I would have no idea how that would go.
I wonder what tax bracket they are in?

i know bands don't make much from album sales that is why the record labels are fighting music sharing so much it is thier money that is being lost. Bands make money from the door at bars and through the merchandise table that money goes mostly to them so if you are in a club buy a cd or a shirt , sticker . my friend went to school in hollywood
to become a recording engineer and also is in a band he learned alot about the artists money and they don't make alot albums sales is less than 10 %. the producer , engineer, management and label get thier share.
they do get money advance for cds but they have to work their asses off
to repay it by being on the road, bus rental and crap like that is expensive
i said alot and i probably am rambling too sorry

I read "somewhere" (don't remember where) that Eminem has one of the most generous record deals going. He gets $2 per CD sold.

Well, the leak has taken place, because I just found the album on Kazaa. I don't think it matters, though, because the vast majority of Gord's fans will buy the album when it comes out.

Well the leak has taken place as mentioned. Personally I have mixed feelings about this whole issue. The first real experience I can recall about this was when music@work leaked out before the release date. I struggled with it for a week or so and finally gave in to downloading it. (which at the time was no easy task with my 28 dial up modem  ) I just couldn't stand it knowing that it was out there and I could listen to it by simply downloading it. I rationalized that I'd be buying the album anyway so...
Since that time I've downloaded a lot of different stuff. I think that it's a great way to preview music and see if it's worth my money or not. I've personally purchased quite a few cd's that I never would have even known about without kazza. I do know however that there are a lot of people out there that do not buy the cds and just download and burn them. I think that most of these people are not really "real" music lovers, and I think or rather hope that the real music lovers will continue to support good musicians by buying the albums. It looks to me though that we're on the cusp of a change in how music is sold to the masses.
So my vote goes for share it here, which has already happened, so really it dosn't matter does it?
