My boyfriend and I have been trying to figure out exactly what's going on in Scared. We've come up with the fact that it's generally about WW2 (please do correct me if I'm wrong), given the "Nazis" and the third verse reference to Pearl Harbour.

"OK you make me scared you did what you set out to do
I'm not prepared, you really had me going there for a minute or two
He said, you make me scared too,
I wasn't through I was getting through
I gotta go, it's been a pleasure doing business with you."

But who is "I" and who is "you"??? Please help!

I've heard it's about a travelling encyclopedia salesman, but as with many of Gord's song lyrics, they're often made up of references to many different experiences the band has had, and when put together as a song don't really have one great meaning (just a bunch of little meanings, if you will).

I have a friend who is absolutely convinced that Scared is about falling in love with a prostitute.
The thing I love about this song is that it can apply to so many of life's situations. My favorite lines (and the most widely applicable, I think) are:
"This is all nothing but cold calculation."
"This goes a little beyond anything I'm used to."
and
"Gotta go- It's been a pleasure doing business with you."
