Rob wasn't saying this publicly for publicity. This is his honest oppinion, given to someone in conversation. So they said the same thing about TATH? Well I love that record.

Anyway, I'm sure of one thing: this record will be somebody's favourite, and probably not everyone's.

I will not give up. My face is set,my gait is fast,my goal is heaven,my road is narrow,my way is rough,my companions are few,my guide is reliable,my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity,or meander in the maze of mediocrity. Don't know how much this will help anyone, but I'm starting to doubt we'll see anything extremely soon. I hope I'll eat my words, but I figured MapleMusic, being a steady supplier of Hip music to the public may have heard something about the new record. Turns out they haven't. Here's the email:

Hi Josh,

It seems that you know as much as we do at this point. Let's hope that it
gets here soon!

Thanks for your email,

Subject: New Hip album?

Hey all,
Curious if you guys knew anything tentative about a release date for the
Tragically Hip's upcoming album? We know it's recorded, mixed and mastered, but that's about all any fans knows. Any help you could give would be extremely appreciated!
Thank you,
Josh

It's gonna be June I'm telling ya......it's the way they've been doing it for yearz, I mean I not opposed to hearin it earlier, it just that in the span of well feb 18th till end of may they need to come with a title, then come up with a cover to suit said title, then they need to print/ press what 100,000 unitz? all that takes time. They know the schedule and thats the blue print they've followed for a millenia. They work well with that time frame so why fix something that ain't busticated? It's just like the sun rises in the east and setz in the west, the hip will release a new cd in June every other year.

Good thought Heron Outside, but I believe Maple Music is an offshoot of Universal records. They handle a number of indie Canadian acts such as Joel Plaskett, Sam Roberts and Gord Downie. True, they also sell the Hip CDs, but The Hip are still handled by Universal. Although the two are somewhat connected, I believe Universal is holding the cards on this one.

Here's the past release dates according to thehip.com:

UTH - August 1989
RA - February, 1991
FC - October 1992
DFN - September 1994
TATH - May 1996
LBU - April 30th, 1997
PP - July 14, 1998
M@W - June 13th, 2000
IVL - June 11th, 2002 (this was announced on April 17th)

So as it doesn't look like every other year, the trend for the last couple albums is a June release. I kinda doubt anything earlier than that since we haven't heard anything from them but who knows.

I'm a little confused, are Sire Records and Universal connected? The Hip changed record companies before IVL was released if i remember correctly.

No they aren't. After TATH, MCA/Universal in the States and The Hip parted ways. That's why LBU wasn't available in the US at the time of its release if I'm not mistaken. They signed with Sire (which was apart of Warner music I think) before Phantom Power came out. After M@W they split as well, and now they're on Zoe/Rounder records in the US I think.

Cheers
