Record Store Day
#1

I didn't see a thread for this.

The list should be coming out this week for April. 10th aniversary this year. Anyone participate in this? If so, any big plans?

I usually head down to Nashville every year. This year will be the same Smile

Even if you don't do RSD, the 3 Hip reissues on vinyl come out the day before RSD, so it gives you an excuse to head on out to your local shop and check out some records Big Grin

Excitement among the Ottawa record stores seems to be sort of waning. I think in part there's some much hype about merchandise that is then not available in Canada, or appears after RSD. They also seem to get stuck with some odd stock -- last RSD, one owner was saying he had countless Ed Sheeran releases, which is not really his store demographic. One of the better stores pulled out last year and just do their own sale ahead of RSD, and the rest seem to be a bit more selective in what they're bringing in.

Also seems to be the releases have been getting less interesting over recent years, though there are still always one or two gems in there. For me it seemed to peak three years ago, lots of releases I was interested in and most I was able to tack down with a few stops. It is a fund day in the stores, usually end up talking with people in line or while browsing.

I still try to make the rounds of all the indie shops on RSD, but I'm always too late, and all the cool exclusive stuff is usually gone by the time I get there. But it's still a good day to go since everything is usually on sale, and I can pick up some stuff that's been on my list for a while at decent prices.

I was reading that the new Sunrise stores will be participating in RSD events once they're up and running, which is pretty cool for a big chain store. HMV never did that.

My favourite part of RSD was always in the in store performances anyways

You won't be shopping there on RSD, but Sam the Record Man is going to have a presence again in Toronto. Ryerson is going to put the iconic sign from the old Yonge St. location on a building in Yonge-Dundas square later this year. I took my first trip to Toronto in 1996 (to see Neil Young and Oasis at Molson Park... Noel walked out on stage that day and said, with typical modesty, "Show your appreciation for the best fookin' band in the world!") and the first place I wanted to go when I got to the city was the Sam the Record Man on Yonge. It was an awesome store with a great selection. I left there with 4 CDs and a two box sets of singles that day. It will be nice to see the sign refurbished and back up again.

That's too bad! I wish more record stores took advantage of this in a big way. In store performances or sales or something to attract people is always fun. I have been going down to Third Man Records in Nashville for 5 or 6 years now and for the past 4 or 5 we have been camping overnight. The people I have met down there have become life long, close friends. It ends up being a huge party in the street with tents and BBQ and beer and live music. It's so much fun. Jack White and TMR are also the best when it comes to putting out crazy vinyl that is exciting and overpriced (haha) and fun to go out and buy. They almost always have live music and events all day as well as food vendors. If you ever have the chance to go down, It is a blast. Nashville in itself is incredible. One of my favourite cities in the world.

This and meeting the people in line. Like any other music event/concert, I always seem to meet incredible people in line that become good friends.

Yikes, this is interesting!

http://thevinylfactory.com/news/david-bo...-bowpromo/

Parlophone will release two limited edition David Bowie records in celebration of the 10th annual Record Store Day, reports Pitchfork.

The first is Cracked Actor (Live in Los Angeles 1974), the first official release of his Philly Dogs Tour show from September 1974, which partly featured in Alan Yentob’s BBC documentary, Cracked Actor. The tracks were mixed by long time Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti.

The full concert will be released on a triple vinyl with the last side reserved for an etching of the Diamond Dogs era Bowie logo. The packaging also features newly commissioned artwork with rare and unseen photographs.

The second record is Bowpromo, a facsimile recreation of a 1971 EP that was pressed in very small quantities. The promo features alternate mixes of some of the songs that would eventually be released on the Hunky Dory album.

Now that I've seen the list, some interesting things this time around. Ben Folds, Jason Isbell, The Cure, Drive-By Truckers all grab my attention. I'll likely make the quick rounds to a few stores and see what I can find.
