Ten Years Gone
#1

What were you doing today ten year's ago?

I woke up, went to class, and then left early to get World Container at the ol' HMV on Spring Garden Road in Halifax. Then I proceeded to procrastinate my work and rock the new Hip album all day long.

The boys rocked the Horseshoe in Toronto ten years ago today as well.

Happy World Container day, everyone!

I got married a week earlier. We were living in China at the time (my wife is Canadian...and also a massive Hip fan. We flew home to Canada to get married). We were flying back to Shanghai 10 years ago today -- an early morning flight. We hovered around the CD store at Pearson airport waiting for it to open to buy WC...but it didn't open before we had to board. My hopes of listening to the album on that insanely long flight were dashed...not to mention there would be nowhere to buy the album in China. Anyway, 18 hours later we were back in our apartment in China and I downloaded the album. As newlyweds that fall, WC became our soundtrack. I'll never forget that day at the airport hoping to get my hands on the new album. Man, times flies.

I was at work and planned to drive over to HMV during lunch to pick up World Container. I remember the morning dragged like crazy. Needless to say, the rest of the work day went by in a pleasant blur since I had the new CD to keep me company. A few months earlier I had seen the Hip at Sasquatch and was already familiar with some of the new songs. I saw the guys three times on the WC tour, culminating in a fantastic show at Marymoor Park in Seattle in the summer of '07. Good times!

Can't remember the exact date it was filmed, but attended the performance of the album for The Hour with George Strombo. MaV, their webmaster, got some hipbasers access to it.
It aired on October 20.
Was interesting to see them play the same songs a couple of times to get the right "take" and Gord's young kid(s?) at the time running around the studio, with security detail of course.

After a few days following the band around Europe, the band's management extended a warm welcome to myself and some of the others on the Europe '06 tour (Still gutted I didn't come watch the World Cup final with you!) to come to the Horseshoe gig and celebrate the release of World Container. I was upfront, sweaty as hell. I thought fondly of that day when I was at the Horseshoe watching this summer's Kingston show. Same spot, I reckon. Great stuff.

Getting ready to head from Winnipeg down to Northern California for the Bridge School Beneift. My seventh and eighth Pearl Jam shows that year plus Neil Young, Foo Fighters, Trent Reznor, Death Cab, Brian Wilson and DMB (not a fan personally) on the bill.

Was also annoyed The Hip were not playing Winnipeg on their mini club tour, especially once the setlists started flowing in. We dont really have a venue though similar to the other rooms they played that fall.

When you are posting "Ten Years Gone" on October 18, 2026, the stories of The Secret Path album release are going to be missing that element of where you picked up the CD. I have great memories of being at Sam the Record Man at opening to pick up FC or DFN, and I know others here have talked about lining up at midnight in some of the bigger cities to pick up those albums. Things were a little quieter at the record store on World Container release day but I can still remember where and when I picked it up. When people think about this release date 10 years from now, stories of waiting for the mail to arrive or waiting for the album to download on your computer aren't going to have the same resonance.

No. However, the World Container release date is on the cover art.

I did pick up the Man Machine Poem vinyl on release day at The Record Centre in Ottawa, so there are still some release memories being made.

I remember trying to get it at Record Theatre in Buffalo on release day (they released the Canadian imports same day or close to it) and they didn't have it. I believe the "October Surprise" winter storm was still messing with shipping. Now I can't remember if I went over to Wal-Mart in Fort Erie to buy it, or just kept checking in at Record Theatre. Either way, I loved that album. Hey, get the kick drum loaded...

10.26.07 Washington DC
10.19.09 Washington DC
7.30.11 Buffalo
11.10.12 NYC
7.19.13 Buffalo
4.18.15 Buffalo
8.12.16 TO
wish I had seen more

Yea I still buy the physical album on release day every time, including today. I download a lot of music too, but there's just something special about holding the CD or vinyl in your hand and having the artwork, lyrics, liner notes, etc.. And they smell great too!
