I know there's a lot going on at the moment with Gord and The Hip, but I was listening to Train Overnight for the first time in a few of months and I'm all about this song now. I loved it when the album was released, but there's something about it now that just puts it over the top. Easily one of my all-time favs by the Tragically Hip.

Yeah, Train Overnight rules as the best rocker on the album (the others that have real staying power for me are T#4 & Stay). The guitar riff has a mid -era Zepplin feel - maybe something that they picked up while openers on the Page-Plant tour in the mid 90s. This one was done somewhat regularly if not frequently on the Evening With The Hip tour supporting MAW. Live, the rhythm guitar part was done accoustically and Gordie's voice just wailed. The way he builds volume and intensity on this one is made all the more amazing by the way he'll sustain a note or phrase after allready seemingly giving it all one could have.
Awesome.

I also really dig this tune. I thought it had a "Rush" feel from the first time I heard the guitars.... then as I saw it performed live... WOW Paul demonstrats some serious hard-playing-on the Acoustic for this song... he leans right into this song and his vocal parts are pretty cool also.

I think there's a lot of great stuff burried in the later half of M@W. As I wind down the pines is really lovely. That one is near the top of my list of songs I wish they played more, along with put it off, let's stay engaged, freak turbulence and eldorado. The bear is great too.

I'm not crazy about Pines, but I agree that there's a lot of overlooked gems in the latter half of M@W. I never thought it was as bad as most people seem to think. But Freak Turbulence, The Bear, and Wild Mountain Honey are three songs I have never heard live but would kill for. What's up with Freak Turbulence?? Is it too hard to play live?? The minute I heard it, I thought it would be the perfect song to start every encore with. I thought it would be a surefire live essential for years!

arseface,
the Bear is one of my all time favorite tracks as well...I think it has such a groovy feel. Easily the unplucked gem from M@W.

Yes, yes. Wild Mountain Honey is perhaps my fave M@W track - another tune with a Zeppelinesque feel, as the guitar riffs double the bass riff throughout almost the enitre song......
