I'm sure he was just making a comment like that to get any phish fans riled up (I'm not sure what his gain is from this) but he does prove a point about some Hip fans' lack of knowledge about other bands. The amount of times I've seen someone post something along the lines of "we're lucky the Hip plays such diverse setlists" proves some fans must not see many bands outside of the popular acts such as U2 or AC/DC who play basically the same setlist every night on a tour.

Of course we're lucky compared hardcore fans of those bands but there is such a huge, diverse world of music out there other than arena rock.

NegPhil - really? come on - Phish are without a doubt a fantastic band - with 4 phenomenally talented musicians - you may not like their thing - you may not like jam bands but Phish have written some amazing things in their time - All of Billy Breathes, Farmhouse, Story Of The Ghost, Rift - Brian and Robert, Dirt, Waste, etc - and honestly Trey is a phucking wicked guitar player

I would lean toward saying no.

I remember an interview where Gord D. said they had eight setlists that were in rotation and I think that still holds true for the most part.

However, 'vault' songs have been dropped (The Bear, Titanic, Dark C are three that come to mind) from earlier in the tour which is too bad because (for me) these are much more interesting to hear than NOiS, Meridian, Poets, Good Life, and all the staples that get played to death. Having said that, I do think they mix up the staples a bit more from night to night compared to past tours.

And the performance is always excellent.

And also, regardless of the lists and songs played, they still kick so much ass, and have moved up to my #1 favorite band to see live. Take that PJ and your 15 show tour and only playing 3 songs off the new album. I wish I could catch the boys one more time this tour.

You must have seen them in TO BEFORE Backspacer was released. They played between 6 and 8 songs off BS at the 5 shows I attended (LA3, LA4, SD, Phl3, Phl4).

PJ will be back on tour in 2010 - watch it go to fire!

The two shows I saw in San Francisco earlier this year re-confirmed my opinion that the Hip are still the best rock n' roll band on the planet. They just kick so much ass every single night. I remember Jim Bryson was quoted early in the tour saying that the Hip never take a night off when it comes to their live show. As for the setlists, I think they've been mixing it up just fine. Yea, I'd love to hear more rarities in the set, but unfortunately the die-hard Hip fanatics aren't the only people they have to satisfy every night. It's the curse of longevity.

I've disagreed with the statement above before, and I'll disagree with it again.

Playing the same songs every night is NOT the price one should be paying for longevity. I know I'm repeating myself, but at this point in the Hip's career almost every Hip fan has heard the band at least once, and has most likely heard NOIS and Courage, etc. If they were to spice things up a little bit, like say, repeat only 50% of the songs from the night before instead of the usual 75%, fans will have more incentive to see the band more than once a tour and thus be able to draw more fans even at multiple nights at the same venue. I'm also of the opinion that your average Hip show is so good, that a first-timer will enjoy it so much he'll want to come back, especially if they don't play NOIS. You see, it's every fans' dream (who has not seen the Hip) to see NOIS live so of course the Hip shouldn't stop playing it, but a first timer will not leave a Hip show disappointed if NOIS is not played, they'll leave craving for more and wanting to see the Hip again as soon as possible.

Your average setlist contains most of the big hits and caters to the casual fan so that they are probably satisfied seeing the band once every 3 years or so. A slightly more varied setlist (I'm not asking for anything extraordinary here) will help exhilerate even casual fans to follow the Hip to more than 1 show per tour (like us 'hardcore' fans do). In the end I think this would help create an even stronger fan community.
