Hey Tiki, we have a pretty big thread regarding how old everyone is here... :thumb:

I think it's really cool that the Hip attracts so many different age groups and walks of life...I never thought my dad and I (I'm 24) would be hanging out at the same concerts together!

I've often thought it would be cool to take the parents along to a show, just to let them bask in the atmosphere and see Gord going nuts.

Ya, my mom (50) just went to her first concert with my brother this past week at the ampitheatre after a solid year of listening on my insistance. While I wouldn't say the Hip have an appeal to all ages equally, they're easy to get behind with enough spins.

I took my mother-in-law (and the wife, of course) to see the boys at the Toledo Zoo Amphitheater, circa '98-'99. I saw so many shows from '98 to '00 that I can't be sure.

She's 69 now, so that puts her at about 63 for her first Hip show. We had front-row-center seats and thanks to three strapping young Canadian lads who protected her from the encroaching masses for the entire show, she had the time of her life. She still talks about it to this day, every chance she gets.

She knows The Hip but has a hard time recalling the name of that "drugged out little kid" that opened for them. For the record, she's referring to Derek Trucks who was very young and *did* seem to be enjoying an altered state of mind.

Derek Trucks opened for the Hip? I didn't know that. Wow, that man is amazing. Was he playing with the Derek Trucks Band at that time, or was it with some other ensemble?

Scottitude, I sure hope the mother-in-law had a good time. I suppose that was her first and last show?.... Sad At least she had the chance to experience the boys in action!

That's great!! I've been trying to get my dad (56) into the Hip for years, but he's still stuck on these old folk groups that he liked when he was a kid.

My dad (47) and I were driving on one of the many trips from Petawawa to Haliburton and I cranked up some live Hip, choice selection of various rants etc., and my dad was grinning and looked at me and said "That guy is pretty f**ked-up now isn't he?" (in a good way). He, too, is stuck in them older bands like Grand Funk Railroad and The Who and doesn't really listen to the Hip but I ALWAYS control the music on roadtrips so they HAVE NO CHOICE but to listen. :thumb:

It was the Derek Trucks Band. If memory serves, he opened several shows on the Phantom Power Tour in the Fall of 1998 in the Western US. I saw the LA, SD, PHX, and Tucson shows of that tour and I believe he opened them all.

I'm a huge Allman Brothers fan, and I have to regretfully admit that I didn't see Derek play one song on that tour, even though I knew very well who he was at the time (and for those of you who don't, he is the son of the original (and current) drummer of the Allman Brothers Band, Butch Trucks). And Derek has now joined his dad as a permanent member of the Allman Brothers, replacing Dickie Betts on guitar.

I'm pretty sure that Butch is his uncle not father. Thanks for the information though. I don't remember the Derek Trucks Band opening for The Hip at all, but I suppose I wouldn't have known who he was at the time anyway. I'll have to go search the archive.org to see if any of those gigs opening for the Hip are up there.

I second guessed myself last night because the HIP graced the Western US twice on the PP tour, once in Oct '98 and again in April '99, and I saw 3 shows on the April swing as well. However, Derek did play on the Fall portion of the tour, here is a link to a little blurb promoting the Nov 98 show in Georgia...

I'm 17 years old - and I know some 14-year-old Hipsters from another board that I post at. Smile
