However, Gord's loud "We Are!" did impress me on this track, especially live.

"You do the combat math... I'm the war artist" reminds me of the way I played "Risk" (the board game.) I always let other people add up the dice and figure out who won the combat and how many armies to remove from each. I was to busy plotting my takeover of Africa. Haha...

All Hail Makeshift ... so happy to see it as an opener, because it is right up there with the best of this new album (along with Joe, Copenhagen, and Gus).
A few of my personal favourite lines:
"you're a complex dune; I'm a cloud of octopus ink"
"from memory metal tension springs. You were gunsmoke and the truth"
other people don't write lyrics like this.

Absolutely, this has been my favorite song since the first listen of the album. I remember driving in my car, listening to the album the first time, thinking the album was pretty damn good, then I got to Makeshift, and I think I cracked a pretty big smile, thinking 'wow, this song is classic hip'. Great guitar hooks, clever lyrics, just pulls you in.
From the earlier posts on hipbase, I thought I was alone. Most people didn't get this song right away, but I think (hope) it's starting to grow on people.
I'm just praying they play it in Saskatoon.... :jump

I first heard Makeshift during the club tour (Richard's on Richards, Vancouver) and thought that it had a great hook. When I heard the lyric properly, I was doubly blown away. I'm sure the reason some people dislike it at first is that the vocals are way down in the mix. Now personally, I love that 'demo' quality, but it's probably the reason why that song isn't an instant standout for people, and why it may not be a hit single. Doesn't sound as studio-polished as most radio tunes---or even as sharp as 'Mean Streak.'
Downie describing himself as 'a cloud of octopus ink' is hilarious, BTW.

The biggest disappointment for me at the show I saw in the summer, was not hearing this song live, as well as Are We Family.

I put Makeshift at the top of the list for best song from IBE with Everywhere being a close second. I hope they play it at the Acc on Nov 26. But play it second because hopefully they open with Grace.

Man what I love about this album is, it really seems that every Hip fan has a different impression.
To be honest, at first listen (like most Hip albums) I was a little let down by this album, however it quickly grew on me.
I was shocked to find that most Hip fans didn't agree with me that "Family" was not most peoples fav's, I guess I just love the softer songs...
But every fan has their own tastes, I was also surprised at The Darkest Canuck's rating, putting Family and Nashville near the bottom, two of my fav's.
I also really like Heaven, and liked it even more when I discovered it's true meaning. Once you know it, it just goes to show that Gord's electric vocals have so much passion behind them in this song, and it makes it that much better.
But if you don't like the song, that's okay too...

I like makeshift I think its a cool tune, but I just love One Night In Copenhagen, its so catchy it really stuck with me, anyone else diggin it??
My only beef is its too short, but thats the way The Hip wants it then its cool by me, I just hit repeat on the cd player to make it seem longer. :thumb:

Copenhagen is great and has the funniest line on the album.
On first listen I loved Makeshift and Are We Family, but then other tunes grew on me: Copenhagen, Heaven and Josephine. Crowd reaction when Gord announced Josephine in Detroit seems to indicate it's the general favorite.
