Nope. As usual I waited 'til the last minute and found out they were like waaaay sold out. Lucky for me I bought tix from a friendly Canadian fan who had a mate who couldn't make it.

Yep, the "Thirst Avenue" show was grossly oversold. Packed like sardines on the floor-- even back in front of the soundbooth. I though Quest may be a bit better because it has an elongated floor area and possibly more standing room the Avenue. (and maybe more standing room upper deck?) Been some time since I was at Quest so I may be wrong. *grin*
Three of us from Fargo are making the trip for sure... who else is with me??

So , here's the skinny on the venue change. First Avenue was packed last time on one of the hottest nights of the year. As a kicker, the air conditioning unit was out so the super-sweaty crowd had condensation pouring off of the walls and handrails. There was standing water (let's hope it was water) in the bathroom. It was truly disgusting. And also a fluke. I have travelled across the land(s) and seen shows at many venues and in many cities. First Avenue has the best combination of sound and sightlines of any club I've been to. I have also been told by the Hip's tour manager that it is one of the band's favorite venues to play in the country. Unfortunately, it is also a club that is going through just a bit of a hard time financially. So I'm guessing they came up just short in their bid to bring back our boys. Too bad. Of all the places in town (this or any) they could play, First Ave would be the best by far.
Conversely, I have taken to seeing many shows at the Quest because it is one of Clear Channels main venues. Fuck Clear Channel (had to throw that comment in)! They have had so many big name acts there in the last couple of years that I've been somewhat forced to go there (Spearhead, Primus, Queens of the Stone Age, Mark Farina, Sonic Youth, Ziggy Marley, Meshell Ndegeocello, just an eclectic mix!) However, after the last time I was there (another miserable concert going experience), I said to several of my friends, "I don't think I'll ever pay to see another show there again." Besides their high ticket prices (hardly a factor), they have the worst setup possible for a crowd to enjoy a show, especially if they want to see the band. The stage is low in height and not very wide, meaning if you are not right up in front or on the balcony, you cannot see. On the balcony, you have one shot: Be in the front row hanging over or you cannot see. The floor holds a lot of people (not quite as many as 1st Avenue) but has no slant to it so as to give the concertgoers a view of the stage. Furthermore, the sides of the main floor have pillars which hold up the second level balcony. These block any view that you'd have if you were slightly off to the side (and besides that the speakers sit floor level, blasting you in the face if you choose that side spot).
At EVERY show I see there people are pushing and shoving their way to the front of the crowd. Nobody is as engaging as Gord. Its gonna get ugly with everyone trying to catch a glimpse. I predict people are gonna be crawling all over each others sweaty, irritated bodies at this one. Me? I plan to get there early and try to hold my ground. I'm not a big guy (5'6") but I'm not tryin' to be pushed out of seein' my faves, the only band that will bring me back to the Quest.
