The Ultimate Hip Trivia Question... mystery met?
#1

Alright, about four years ago on the newsgroup we were debating just what song the boys are playing at the beginning of "Heksenketel."

Nobody could name it, so I figured I try again here and see if we can crack this riddle.

They're warming up at the western speedway, and the song can be heard as shots of the venue, the guys smiling and rehearsing, water trucks spraying and Billy Ray and Gord goofing around roll across the screen.

It could be a jam, but it seems pretty well structured and has a really good melody, Bobby even plays the riff later on during a sound check clip. Gord seems to be mumbling something. I think I can make out: "I'll tell you something... and to think it's the same eternity."

I really wish I knew what song it was.

Anybody?

I found one on Amazon.ca A bit expensive though...I searched a few other places and it seems to be out of stock there. Anyway, here is the link:

It's not that uncommon to find VHS copies at HMV's, Sam The Record Man or Sunrise Records Stores. I tend to see them every once and a while... but I'm sure the online retailers (Amazon, Chapters, Future Shop etc...) or e-bay would have copies for sure.

Maybe even Google "House on Fire Productions," I know Mike is doing documentaries for the Life Network's "Real Life Stories" series, so his work might be available elsewhere online...

I've alway wondered about that song myself. ARA '93 was part of the Fully Completely tour, and I'm guessing it was the bare skeleton of a new song that might have eventually appeared on Day for Night.

I don't know if you are talking about the very first jam (it is faster) where Gord is singing ...."Yeah Yeah fingertips" and them it breaks off into the part at the soundcheck where he is saying "...it could be me chewing gum man.....1...2....chew...chew"

-or-

the other, slower jam later in the same clip that is more pigeon cameraish. If it is the latter, I think it is Wheat Kings. If you listen to the live jam outs on wheat kings (especially the New Years Day 2000 show) there is a lot of that same riff in the song.

Thanks, but nope. It's the first song, the faster one, playing as the film opens, just before Butch speaks. It does come before the "gum" part though. Bobby then strums the first few notes as the camera gives us a medium range shot of him on stage.

And the lyric may be "charity" and not "eternity" as I first expected. It's a really great sounding jam... the mystery continues...

Maybe somebody who has computer skills could link the song, it's the first 20-30 seconds of "Heksenketel."

I always thought it sounded a bit like Impossibilium...although I haven't watched/listened to it lately.
