It is a great song!! It's one that twists both your mind and your guts. The idea of the road, and pseudo-friendships. Those bonds we think that will last forever evaporate... Well written, well played, excellent live. Overall perfectly Hip.

My favourite song on PP, hands down. Live, it rocks. Love the lyrics. Epitamizes life on the road for so many bands.

I heard that this song is actually about some guy he met on the road who later committed suicide; hence why he's "too late".

Yes, it's about Jim Ellison from the band Material Issue. I believe he committed suicide somewhere around 1996.

very powerful. This song always overwhelms me. Gord's lyrics, they make me weep to be a human i'm not sure why but i've always worn my emotions on my sleeve. The few times i've seen it live were almost spiritual, this song was meant to be extended. Gord's poetry and the beautiful music. and then emperor penguin begins, nuff said

I agree, this song is amazing. I remember the first time I heard it was in Vancouver during the henhouse tour in 96' I was amazed by it then and it was great to hear the completed version on PP.
One of my favourites. :thumb:

Both my gf and I think Escape is one of the best Hip songs of all time. The emotion in Gord's voice is gripping and grabs me.
I think one of the best versions is the The Planet Studios boot (July 29/98) in Sausalito Calf. It's played with passion and emotion, and it may be one of the best examples of the emotion of GD's singing of all time.
However, I always thought that the song was about a musician's affair on the road, and the connection between two musician's that only they could get and comprehend, and the life that only they could understand and that their families couldn't come close to understanding. Thus the great connection.
But I guess I'm wrong, and thank's to you all for the information on what the song is really about.
The Hip's music is quite thought provoking.
