I ran across this old Eric Johnson tour poster on EBay, and it says The Hip opened up for him. It says it is from 1991, but I think that is wrong.
I have never been aware of this leg of a Hip tour, or many Florida dates for that matter - can anyone here shed some light on this?

I believe it was around the Fall (September?) of 1991. I saw the show at George Washington University in Washington, DC. The Hip played about 35-40 minutes. They said that EJ was cool to them, but at least Robby wasn't a huge fan. He agreed that EJ was a great guitarist but noted that his songs didn't have much emotion. I stood at the side of the stage for EJ but only lasted about 30 minutes.

That Hip graphic was in use during 1991 - I had a shirt from a show at Fort Henry in Kingston with it.

I have 10 fingers and toes (fingers and toes) and I still can not count the months correctly.

I was at 4 or 5 of those shows ....Harrisburg PA was one....don't remember where else tho...except somewhere in Virginia. EJ didn't socialize too much with the band. He was a little out there ...liked to stand in front of the mirror and change his outfits and such. Guys said that his guitar tech told them that he never had broken a guitar string lol.
Hip have always had a big following in Harrisburg...I noticed in Harrisburg (at Club Met or Metron, whichever it was called then) that a lot of people left after the Hip played; whereas at other venues they were there for EJ.

first time I saw the hip was when they backed up eric johnson in burlington vt 09/30/91 on this tour. I believe it was the only time I saw gordy with long hair I remember at the time that eric almost bailed cause he had the flu.
I think it was a few months before (or maybe summer 90) when I first started getting into the hip and snoozed on getting a ticket for the first boat show on lake champlain. . I was sitting at the bar next to the ferry, kind of looking for a ticket but not really pushing it. kind of a bummer I missed that cause people still tell me what a great show it was.
they did another boat show a few years back when they did the series of shows where you had to buy the cd (IVL ?) and they randomly drew names and contacted you if you won tickets. I bought 8 cd's to try to win !! Also the local radio station was running a contest where 10th caller won tickets so I was buggin them too. It was the day of the show and I guess I couldn't sleep cause I didn't get tickets yet so I was up around 3:30 am to check my email to see if the hip told me I won but there was no email. About 10 minutes later, in pops an email and my heart jumped and I let out a yell that probably woke up the neighborhood ! great show it was – they opened with NOIS which was a first for me. I remember once telling their old manager (jake gold ?) that instead of closing with NOIS as they did a lot, they should open with it.

Eric Johnson/The Tragically Hip - 10/03/1991 - Michigan Theater

Eric Johnson was opening for RUSH on The Roll The Bones Tour (a recommendation from Alex Lifeson) a few days after the short tour with The Tragically Hip was complete.

Johnson and Lifeson are good friends apparently as they were backstage together at Massey Hall in Toronto on Joe Satriani's 2006 Super Colossal Tour here.

RUSH and The Hip are good friends as well.

Robby Baker and Paul Langlois and Eric Johnson were reunited ten years later in 2001 when they joined the band Big Wreck along with members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Le Cirque Éloize and Canada’s premiere professional taiko drumming group Uzume Taiko for a high concept performance.

September 13, 2001 – Winspear Centre Concert Hall – Edmonton, Alberta as part of the ‘Du Maurier Ltd. Concert Stage’
