Watched this yesterday and loved it. My wife said something like it was the first time she would have even considered using a word like 'sexy' to describe Harper.

I didn't think Harper's performance was half-bad!
That being said, he did it to try to win back some of the votes he lost in Quebec due to the art cutbacks... I wish politicians would act more human for reasons other than votes sometimes!
It's nice to see Robot-Harper loosen up a little though. Maybe Stockwell Day finally pulled the stick out of Steve's butt!

Exactly.
Appear at an NAC event (the kind of event he wrote off last year as a "rich gala" for elitist artists living off the public tit) and bank on the public's painfully short memory: look! the PM <i>loves</i> the arts! (Never mind the cutbacks, folks, watch him sing!)
(That being said, something I like about Canadian politics is the willingness of our politicians to risk making fools of themselves in public -- and I think this is one of the ways they can earn public respect.)

Yup. Your sentiments are exactly the ones I had watching this. Snubbed this thing last year and blasted the arts. Plays this year to win back some support.
And I kind of like the guy.
And yes, I spoke with some American friends down here (particularly conservative ones) and they couldn't imagine the president doing anything like this. Unpresidential, after all. We expect it.
And even though this is a brilliantly conceived political ploy (Harper's no idiot), I can't help but smile watching that video. I never thought I'd say it, but Ignatieff might want to sit up and pay attention here.

That was something that Chretien was always very good at.
It's interesting, the "unpresidential" thing. Having created powerful national myths, America needs its president to embody those myths, so he is expected to behave something like an elected monarch, that is, untouchable. But Canada seems to enjoy reminding its prime ministers that they remain, above all, our employees, and so they shouldn't get big ideas about being all important.
