Not sure if this should have gon in the non-hip catergory, but it is sort of Hip related.

Does anyone remember The Hip coverband, "Road Apples"?
They eventually became "Vegabond Groove".

This guy was the "Gord Downie" impersonator of the band. Micheal Compeau.

ive seen them play before - as road apples, no originals. Are they amazing? no. Are they the hip? no. What they are is a band that presents their own versions of hip tunes, with the occassional rant thrown in to boot. they arent pretending to be the hip; they are just a bar band playing a few good tunes and doing a pretty good job of it too.

i think they`re just doing what alot of us do when we`re driving down the highway or rocking out at home or insert hip listening situation here, albeit in front of an audience, which takes ahem courage :wink: i`d be willing to bet that 90% of hipbasers have channeled their inner gord at some point.... obviously they are huge fans, good on them... that review was pretty harsh

For the most part I would agree with this. It's one thing to be a cover band , playing songs you like to play and the drunks want to hear on a Saturday. It's another thing to be a tribute artist and present yourself as the next best thing, when clearly, you aren't. Road Apples are a cover band, plan and simple and at the end of the day no gets hurt by them. The kind of pubs they play aren't going to usually host up-and-coming singer songwriters anyway.

Last time I saw Road Apples was in 2005 and Ackroyd was there. I can't imagine seeing Ackroyd ever attending, say, a Practically Hip show. Then again, if the Prac show had a lot of young Queen's students...
