when i heard NIF, it didn't seem like a full song (at least in terms of hip songs), but it did remind me of the many half-baked Robert Pollard songs (of Guided By Voices) that seem like throwaways at first but then somehow make the entire album work by allowing the "big" songs to really stand out.
It's hard to explain, but the GBV album
Universal Truths and Cycles is a good example. There are little one-minute long songs where you're going "what the hell was that?", then followed by a rock song of epic riffs and proportions. :mrgreen:
While GBV's songs are often a "crapshoot" of hit and (mostly) misses, what's priceless about their use of throwaway songs is that after hearing one of the "epic" songs in an album like
Universal Truths and Cycles, you look over at the time and the damn thing was barely 3 and half minutes long! Case in point: "Everywhere with Helicopter".
Anyway, the first two songs of IBE always seemed, to me, like they needed some sort of quirky half-song in between. Hey, there's the pun!
