I feel that this is the most under-rated, and under-played (besides NOIS) album in their repertoire.
Over-opiated, She Didn't Know, Weight Comes Down, all excellent, and under played songs.
Just a thought as I drove to work today.

I was in the middle of working just now and needed something to listen to and the first thing I decided to load up was Up To Here. I'll Believe is on right now. Funny that.

The whole album kicks ass, but back when it came out in 1989, you certainly couldn't call it underrated or underplayed. It is what started Canada being mental for the Hip. I personally warped 2 tapes in my car tape player. Both radio and MuchMusic played NOIS and Blow to death, and of course in concert, they played all the songs, plenty of times.
It's just a time thing.
I find one of the pure beauties of Up To Here is that if it was released today, it would be just as good and relevant as it was 15 years ago. It's a timeless album.

Totally forgot about I believe in you. "Les Infantes in the cradle". Awesome. On a whole album basis, it maybe there best one.

Its my favorite driving cd as well, if Im going on a road trip its the first thing I think of, HONEY GRAB THE UP TO HERE ALBUM!!! Lets rock and roll!

Billy is probably right. I'm sure that album was way huge in 1989.
I'm a newbie with to Hip. I've only been into them since 2001. My buddy Sean from the TO introduced me to them while we were both living in Chicago. Before I exiled myself to Kansas City. 9 out of 10 people haven't even heard of Canada here, let alone the hip!

This is one on our favs too. Most certainly under played. Jealous of those individuals who were introduced to the band in the early days when these songs actually got some play. it must have been sweet to experience early Hip too. The maturing of the the band, both personally and musically.

UTH is interesting because it shows the Hip's stunning leap from mildly promising bar-band (EP) to major, major act, but also catches them figuring out exactly what kind of sonic and lyrical palettes they want to go with. A song like 'Another Midnight'---which I think is pretty weak---shows them tinkering with a sort of MOR (lame) folkish sound, for instance. And the lyrics are much more oriented to straightforward storytelling than Downie's mature style.
I love the record but maintain that there is a higher quotient of relatively weak songcraft on that record than most other Hip CDs: 'I'll Believe in You,' 'She Didn't Know,' 'Midnight,' and even 'Every Time You Go,' 'Trickle Down'---these are all songs with a following, sure. But they're nothing you couldn't hear from dozens of other bands with pretensions to lyrical intelligence.
So I think it's a good record with lots of great songs, but the work of a band still finding itself.
