I agree with almost everything he wrote actually... especially the stuff about Pretend and World Container.

He called Pretend and World Container overproduced, suggested that the Hip have been struggling to find a sound since Phantom Power, and gave World Container a more-or-less mixed review.

I don't get this "finding their sound" mumbo jumbo. What does it mean? They have gone in different directions in their career, which is what I expect from them. If someone doesn't like how IVL sounds or IBE sounds or whatever, that's fine but what is this mysterious "sound" that The Hip have trouble finding? I don't mind hearing a blistering rocker like "Rink" and then a slow piano ballad like "Pretend" on the same record. I agree that some songs sound better with less production but I am confused with the "finding their sound" premise. What are they supposed to sound like? Are they supposed to do fast paced blistering rock? Do all slow ballads? Do all mid temp rockers? Acoustic? All electric? All keys? What?

I was thinking the same thing when I read that review. I think the Hip found their sound a long time ago, most likely back in 1994 when they recorded Day for Night. Sometimes they go in different directions and try different things from album to album, but I don't think they've ever had difficulty finding their sound. I've also seen many reviews refer to the band as "spinning their wheels" on the last few albums, which is another phrase that I totally disagree with.

that's the beauty of the hip...that they have many "sounds"...there's the "down n dirty gritty southernly rockin & rollin (but mostly rockin)" hip...the emotionally chargerd leave nothing in the tank, look you dead in the eye, eat your heart out with a spoon" hip (springtime, escape, nautical, rink, you're everywhere, are you ready?)...there's lightfoot-esque hip (bobcaygeon, long time, fiddler, scared, pines, dire wolf, 38 years old)...and all sorts of sounds that fall in between, and borrow/piece themselves together from the aforementioned...that's what makes them my favourite band...
