Newbie question: Hip Sound Checks
#1

Quick newbie question... since I've never been to a Hip concert early enough (or any concert for that matter) to see the sound check, I was wondering, can you get to the concert really early and hear the sound check? Or do they usually do the sound check before the gates open?

Thanks! Smile

Always done before the gates open... but you can sometimes hear it from the outside depending on the venue...

I've never known anyone to get into a gig for the soundcheck - sadly. Although, I went to see James Dean Bradfield at The University Of London Union a couple of months back. We went up to the student bar there to have a drink and some food, and it turned out that the stage etc was just across the hall from the bar, so we could hear the whole soundcheck really clearly! Big Grin

Sorry for that little ramble... it's late.

I got in for a soundcheck one time in Minneapolis MN. The show was at the Minnesota Zoo on the Phantom Power Tour. We got there pretty early, and security was non existant, we pretty much walked in and watched them rip through "700 ft Ceiling" "Vapour Trails" and "Poets". Weirdly enough, 700ft Ceiling didnt make it onto the set list. Anyway, it was pretty damn cool.

I believe the 2004 halifax crew got in. they talk about it in the hilarious pre-show bonus on the dvd.

come to think of it, i'm not 100% sure of this. It has been a long time since i've seen it, but it is hilarious.

Rory, Jamie, and Darren just missed the soundcheck at Sydney or they just arrived at the end of it I think.

In Pittsburgh earlier this year Soylent Greg was there to catch the Boys' sound check. It was an outdoor stage and anyone could just walk up and listen. If I remember correctly, he said they played Sherpa and others - I was so P-O'd because my wife and I had been walking around the stage area just prior to that and then bolted to excape the heat/get a beverage. The next night at ArtPark in Lewiston my wife and I were doing some hiking behind the ArtPark and we were able to overhear the soundcheck from the trails that follow along behind the venue. We heard Chagrin Falls and part of another song that at the time I had no idea what it was...now that I just listened to that clip of "Pretend" on YouTube, I think that might be it. I'll have to have the wife listen to it tonight to verify.

That probably made it better - you're own private performance of that song!

Hey, I was gonna say that! That was ridiculously awesome, just standing 10 feet away from the stage and listening. IIRC, they did Sherpa, Heaven, Fly, and Lake Fever, all of which ended up in the set later.

So what i'm sayin' is, if you go see them at an outdoor show, get there early! :thumb:

yes it was fantastic...i think it was around noon the day of the stratford concert...i was helping out with cleanup from the night before, restocking beer tents, etc and they did like this 1 hour "sound check"...holy shite we all just stopped doing what we were doing ( maybe 10 of us)and went up to the stage with a beer in hand...i have some pics but will have to figure out how to post them somewhere. and speaking of pics the photographer from the stratford beacon herald is fantastic (Scott Wishart), and there were some good shots in the MOnday Stratford Beacon Herald...maybe they are on line there
