i'm visiting my parents house, and my dad is having a problem with his computer..he'll be listening to a cd thru windows media player, and all of a sudden the disc will just eject...he says it's been happening quite a bit lately..anybody know what this could be??
and my dad is actually quite computer literate..i'm very proud of him..he even has an mp3 player...
and for those who knew, he suffered a stroke about a year ago..just before xmas last year..a quick update.he's improved so much..i'm very proud of his recovery and determination...last year, he couldn't move...the other day he was on the roof cleaning the gutters!!!

Wow, that is great for your Dad. So many people have strokes, heart attacks and do nothing after the fact. By doing nothing they are shortening their life span by many years.
As for the CD problem, I have no idea.
I need 2 Kingston Tickets, please help.

I'd say it would be best to find out what type of cd-drive you have and try a firmware update on it -- lots of problems can be worked out by flashing the cd-drive's bios...

Its possible to script the opening and closing of a cd drive -- so Chris might be right; it could be spyware, but I don't think its the Sony DRM rootkit -- as I havent heard of this as a symptom, but it could be piggybacking malware, as apparently sony's product opens up some holes and serves as a nice foundation to launch outher scripts, etc.
Back up the documents maybe and roll the computer back to before the problem existed?

thanks for the tips guys..i'll try it out..i don't think he has listened to anything new lately..he's more of a classic jazz guy...and lance, thanks! you're right..some people never recover and it's great he kept a sense of humour about it..i think it helped..that and my mum has been, in his words "an absolute angel" throughout..in some weird way it brought them closer together...

I'm not sure if this is one of the symptoms of their problem, but if it just started happening in the last month or so, and if the CDs your Dad is listening to are new releases by Sony or BMG, this might be the cause.
Google has thousands of pages on this topic, but all the solutions aren't happy ones...
The root kit has been around for over a year. The problem would have showed itself earlier.

Have you tried a cd-dvd/rom cleaning disc? They are about $10 - well worth it. Also, have you tried cleaning the CD itself?

I had a similar problem, and I know this is of little help, but simply reinstalling a few key components seemingly fixed everything. It may have been a random stroke of luck...but you never know.
