Wow, strange that we were just talking about him. Certainly one of the all time great calls.
I used to really enjoy listening to late season games from Oakland or Kansas City in the early 90's on The Fan. He and Howarth would split the games and really seemed to enjoy each others company on air.
Bless Tom, and let his family know he made an impact and is etched in many a Jays fan's memory.

Sad news. As an avid Jays fan in the 80s and 90s, I simply can't add up the number of hours I listened to Tom broadcast. Not to get all Bob Costas here, but a summer day wasn't a summer day unless I heard Tom's voice.

Im not a big Jays fan by any means. But being a sports fanatic, I can appreciate good annoucing, and its such an important part of sports that sometimes gets overlooked. Maybe its because we hear these individuals and never see them, I dont know. All I know is without Bob Cole my Saturday nights just wouldn't sound the same, it will be a sad day when that man retires or passes on too. So in that light Tom was great a great announcer and for that I have to say thanks for the memories.

bob cole is terrible...i can't wait until him and harry are off hockey night in canada..Jim Robson..now there's a guy that could do play by play
What exactely makes him terrible? He might not be the "best" announcer, but his voice is synonymous with hockey night in Canada. And I admit he used to be alot better, but the guy is 72 years old give him some credit. But I cant stand Harry Neale myself he's a bonehead.

CBC is waaaaaay to Leaf biased you're totally right. Im not implying that he's great because he is the voice of HNIC, but Im looking at his entire career, Im not basing it on his performances of late, everyone knows he's losing it. I just like hearing his voice I guess, must be memory burn or something. :lol:

I was surprised to hear Tom Cheek passed away... I knew he was battling brain cancer, but I thought he was battling it with more success... unfortunately that proved to not be the case.
I know his call of Joe Carter's Series-winning home run will go down in history ("Touch 'em all, Joe! You'll never hit a bigger one in your life!), but the most vivid memory I have of listening to him is during the World Series with Atlanta... I think it was Game 2. I was at home working on some particularly difficult homework (university math... *shudder*), and as I usually did I had the radio on in the background, only I was listening to the ball game instead of music. Not much seemed to be happening on both fronts, until I heard this; "and the pitch to Ed SPRAGUE!!! It's a drive! It's deep left field! It's GONE, BLUE JAYS HAVE THE LEAD!!" Immediately my head perked up, my homework was forgotten and I watched the rest of the game on TV. But what a perfect call by Cheek... I'll remember it forever.
Rest in peace Tom, after 4,306 games in a row, you've earned it.
