So I saw the Trews last night with the Novaks opening. It was a good show. The same type of crowd was there, although not as bad as usual. I don't understand it. The Trews don't seem like a band to mosh to but that doesn't stop the idiots in the crowd.
The show was good. I could have done without the Zep cover "Whole Lotta Love" since I've heard it before from them. I would have preferred some more variety. Also, the drummer has to stop those annoying drum solos. We get it, you can play the drums.... Other than that, it was a good show. The Novaks were alright.
After the show, I talked with a few of the boys from both bands. I didn't really have much to talk about though.
Jack Spyrek (bass player for the Trews)- He's an odd cat. Weird guy. He stayed after a long time before getting on the bus. Doesn't talk much. Gives Yes and No answers. He seemed like a decent guy but he is almost like a mute and wears pants that should be pulled up higher for sure. Asked him is he keeps in touch with Gordie Johnson. He said he doesn't talk to him any. The lead singer of the Novaks said he saw Grady in Ontario and said they are the loudest band you'll ever hear.
Colin (lead singer of Trews)- Very quiet. VERY QUIET. Came out and didn't say much. He was a low talker, which is the complete opposite of his high energy voice on stage (sounds like someone else I listen to). He told the story of how the Trews got their name. I think he was joking but anyway. The story involved a dream their drummer had which included Tom Sellick and Trident gum. I'll leave it at that.
Sean Dalton (drummer Trews)- I didn't talk to him at all. He was over in the corner picking up three seemingly VERY YOUNG girls who followed him into the bus.
John-Angus (lead guitar Trews)- I didn't say anything to him. He came out and walked to the bus.
I did have a long chat with the singer of the Novaks. He is an interesting cat. It was funny because he noticed my IBE shirt and talked about the Hip a little bit. He said he wasn't into the Hip's music too much but he sat down and looked at Gord's lyrics one day and was amazed. Jim Morrison's name came up when talking about lyrics. He said Morrison's lyrics were mysterious but didn't really mean anything while Gord's lyrics weren't easy to decipher but they mean something. I found that interesting.
Just to make this post longer than it already is
I'll mention that my shirt got at least two fans to react. Some guy walked up to me before the show and pointed at my shirt. He said how great IBE is and his gf loved it too. He wondered where I got such a great shirt and said he has to get one. Strangely enough, he had on a Nickelback t-shirt.
Oh yeah, the funniest moment of the night came courtesy of the Novak's lead guitar player after the show. We're outside and some kid is getting his Novak's cd signed. They asked him if it was hard to find. The kid says he was going to get the new Nickelback cd and then picked up the new Novak's album. Well, the funny part is that just as he was saying he was buying the new Nickelback, I look over and see the guitar player chuckling. He was making fun of Nickelback, the fan, or maybe both. The kid asked the bass player of the Trews if he liked Nickelback and he said he didn't. This is strange because I've read on their website that they have opened for Nickelback and are good friends with them.
