That was definitely the height of their popularity. They were freakin' HUGE
in the mid 90s. Every kid in my high school must have had a copy of that album. In '94 they were just as popular as bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. I had been a fan since Up to Here, and it was great to finally see them get the recognition they so richly deserved. Strange how it never translated to the rest of the world.

That was the same year we got ROAD APPLES to play at one of our dances and it had the biggest turn-out. And that year when the HIP played SNL we had a school-wide contest for predicting which 2 songs they were going to perform.

An absolute masterpiece of Canadian rock. I love this album, I'll never forget all those hours I spent listening to it after I bought it. It grew on me so fast, and 5 months later I was at my first Hip show in Hamilton it was a special night ( <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.hipbase.com/archive/concert.php?id=113">http://www.hipbase.com/archive/concert.php?id=113</a><!-- m -->) the new songs sounded amazing live, I remember the crowd going crazy over the new songs.



Just an amazing record, possibly the best Canadian album ever?

Grace, Too- a setlist staple, great opener, a live classic. A+
Daredevil- cool song, love the lyrics "plungin over the falls.." B+
Greasy Jungle- love the opening "greaasy jungle, metropolis noir.." just sets the tone for the rest, aaaaaaaah aaaah so cool. A-
Yawning or Snarling- one of my faves, I love the build-up to the hard part, right at 1:15 it kicks in. A+
Fire in the Hole- a pure rocker, awesome live, what more can you say? B+
So Hard Done By- a fan favorite it seems, not one of my favorite DFN tracks but its solid, very groovy, cool lyrics. A-
Nautical Disaster- The best Hip song every written, amazing live, a true fan favorite. Probably on 95% of all Canadian's fave song lists. (it should be anyway) A++
Thugs- another of my DFN favorites. Cool drums, and I love the guitars on this song. Always fun to sing along to..Ruuuuuuby!! A+
Inevitability of Death- another rocker, love the chorus, its so hard to sing when your drinking! B+
Scared- one of Gord's best, love the lyrics to this song. Very calming, almost makes you want to cry, especially when singing along at a concert. A+
An Inch an Hour- another great rocker, my favorite thing about this song is how the chorus rhymes, I love when things rhyme, huh? B+
Emergency- my least favorite on the album, not to say its a bad song, but someone always has to come in last dont they? Love the rain intro, reminds me of "Riders on the Storm" kinda. B-
Titantic Terrarium- another of my all time Hip favorites, love the intro and the song has some of my favorite lyrics, always calms me out this song, I love it! A+
Impossibilium- hmm, this one of those forgotten songs it seems. I never hear anyone say much about it, a solid rocker nothing spectacular, but definitely not terrible. B

I have to say from top to bottom their best work ever, if I had to rate this album Id give it an A+, an album every Hip (and music) fan should own. Thanks for the reminder Opiated, I just listened to the whole disc and it brought back some awesome memories. :thumb: :thumb:

I think it definitely holds it's own as one of the greatest albums in the history of Canadian rock. In my opinion it's right up there with Neil Young's "Harvest", Joni Mitchell's "Blue", the Band's "Music From Big Pink", and Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown". DFN is a masterpiece, no doubt about it.

DFN! I have no hesitance in calling this album my fave of all time. It's just so complete, so well thought out, so chilling. Not chilled. Chilling. It scares me.

Although i'm not a huge fan of Fire in the Hole and So Hard Done By, they are essential to the album. The album is nearly flawless...

(But it's weird, I listen to other Hip albums more...but when I start listening to DFN it stays in my Discman the longest ***BRACKET INSIDE A BRACKET ALERT***(Ya, I don't own an iPod. Deal with it.))

That means on this [that] date in 1994, I was sitting in an OAC economics class with my buddy Paul (not Langlois) in rapture over how amazing Daredevil was ... plunging over the falls; that old equilibrium just starting to spin and spin.

It's ok, man. I don't own one either. In fact I don't have a CD burner or a cell phone either...and I still buy CDs from the store because I like having the original packaging, artwork, and lyrics. Long live the stone age!

Canadian classic...

Fantastic album. It changed perceptions of the band. They went from being a rocking bar band to something altogether different. They became known for so much more. They showed that they had a lot more to offer than just hard rocking songs. This is the cd that Dave Bidini said really turned him on to the Hip. He was asked if he thought of the Hip as just another beer swilling crowd type of bar band and he said "YES......then I heard Day for Night"......That's when Bidini really gained respect for the boys.

Day for Night not only sounds incredible, but for some reason it gives me the craziest feeling when listenting to it. Unexplainable, just takes me to a new world of hip appreciation.

The boys were on top of their game on this album for sure.

DFN is far and away my favourite Hip album. Since it's now been put into my head, I'm going to listen to Greasy Jungle before I drift off to sleep.

Amazing... I would have just been starting 3rd year university at the time. I'm sure I had this tape in my Walkman on the bus ride to school many a time (tape? hock: Man, how old am I??), and it would have provided the soundtrack from anything ranging from doing homework to pre-drinking parties, to nights out at the bars, to post-drinking... well, you get the idea. :wink: :lol:

Anyway, I'm totally in agreement with everyone here, Day For Night is a masterpiece... an album made by what is arguably Canada's best rock band while at the peak of their powers. If the Hip decided to do a concert one night where they played all or nearly all of DFN, with maybe a few other songs from their other albums sprinkled in, I doubt anyone would complain about the setlist... it would probably rank among the best concerts the boys have ever done.

I remember everyone had D4N when I got to my first semester of college, fresh out of high school. Unfortunately I was still in the dark. I wasn't until the second Roadside tour that I discovered the pure bliss that is The Hip.
